The journey begins by traversing a woodland teeming with fragments of local flora. This stretch offers breathtaking panoramas of São Jorge and Santana’s agricultural landscapes as the trail’s first segment. Post reaching the trail’s midpoint, the levada emanating from the island’s heart and hugging the slopes of the mountains, meanders through a magnificent stretch of native forest that is both mature and abundant in natural diversity.
The trail concludes at Ribeiro Bonito, a spot where one can’t help but feel immersed in a spectrum of raw nature. This area is a part of the Laurisilva forest, a UNESCO World Nature Heritage site since 1999, where the authentic Madeiran vegetation finds its truest manifestation. Its unique locale and seclusion gives one a sense of stepping back in time, as if discovering the island anew.
