Setting Sail from Fumba

The sun was just beginning to rise as I found myself in Fumba, ready to embark on the Safari Blue tour. The air was filled with the scent of the ocean, and the promise of adventure was palpable. As a wildlife photographer, I’ve always been drawn to the natural beauty of Africa, and this private snorkeling and lagoon tour seemed like the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration.

Our guide, Abu, greeted us with a warm smile and a wealth of knowledge about the area. We boarded a traditional dhow, a type of local boat, and set sail towards the sandbank. The water was a mesmerizing shade of turquoise, and the gentle rocking of the boat was soothing. Along the way, Abu shared stories about the local marine life and the importance of preserving these delicate ecosystems.

Upon reaching the sandbank, we were treated to a feast of fresh tropical fruits. The sweet taste of watermelon and pineapple was the perfect complement to the salty sea breeze. It was a moment of pure bliss, surrounded by the stunning beauty of Zanzibar’s coastline.

Snorkeling in Crystal Clear Waters

The underwater landscape was teeming with life. Schools of colorful fish darted around the coral reefs, and I was lucky enough to spot a few starfish and even a lionfish. It was a photographer’s dream, and I couldn’t resist capturing the beauty of the marine life through my lens.

For those who are not strong swimmers, like my partner, Abu was incredibly accommodating. He ensured that everyone felt safe and comfortable, offering assistance and guidance throughout the snorkeling session. His patience and understanding made the experience enjoyable for everyone.

Exploring Kwale Island

After a morning of snorkeling, we made our way to Kwale Island for a delicious seafood buffet. The spread included lobster tail, prawns, and octopus, all cooked to perfection. As we dined under the shade of a shelter, Abu regaled us with tales of Zanzibar’s history and culture.

The island itself was a treasure trove of natural wonders. We visited a fallen baobab tree, its massive trunk a testament to the passage of time. The local market stalls offered a glimpse into the island’s vibrant arts and crafts scene, with beautifully crafted souvenirs available for purchase.

As the day drew to a close, we set sail back to Fumba, the wind filling the sails and propelling us forward. The sound of the waves was a soothing backdrop to the laughter and camaraderie on board. It was a day filled with unforgettable experiences, and I left with a renewed appreciation for the beauty and diversity of Zanzibar’s marine life.
