The Castle of Nipozzano is a historic estate belonging to the Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi, a family renowned for over 700 years of winemaking heritage. Originally constructed around the year 1000 as a fortress, it now stands at the center of Chianti Rufina DOCG wine production. Nearby, the Pomino region offers a distinct expression of Tuscan wine. Situated in the hills at altitudes reaching 700 meters, Pomino’s cooler climate yields wines that are fresher, more aromatic, and lighter-bodied. Pomino was included in the world’s first official wine region classification in 1716, commissioned by the Grand Duke of Tuscany—preceding both the French AOC and Italian DOC systems. In the 19th century, the Frescobaldi family led the way in introducing international grape varieties such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Merlot, inspired by French techniques.
