Highlights
  • The journey initiates from the Ponte Vecchio. This aged bridge, positioned close to the Roman crossing, was Florence’s only bridge over the Arno until 1218. The existing bridge was reconstructed following a flood in 1345. During World War II, it was the single bridge over the Arno that the escaping Germans chose not to demolish.

Moving alongside the Arno, we reach a historic and concealed staircase in the Oltrarno. From here, we ascend to Piazzale Michelangelo.

  • The Piazzale Michelangelo, situated on the southward hills of Florence’s historic center, was modeled by architect Giuseppe Poggi. Amid the period of 1869, when Florence was Italy’s capital, an extensive city revamping took place and the ‘lungarni’ (riverside pathways along the Arno) were formed.

In 1873, a duplication of Michelangelo’s David was transported to the square with the assistance of nine oxen pairs. This monument has a dominant position, overseeing the city from above, much like a sentinel watching over all the splendors that the city of Florence exhibits. This square was devoted to the remarkable Renaissance artist Michelangelo and the David replica was positioned in the square alongside the four allegories of the Medici Chapels of San Lorenzo.

  • As per local custom, the martyr St. Miniatus, who suffered during Decius’s persecution in the 3rd century, was interred on the hill currently bearing a church in his name. Bishop Hildrebrand proposed the construction of the basilica and the contiguous Benedictine monastery on the area where the saint’s relics were believed to have been discovered.

The Basilica of San Miniato al Monte was constructed between the 11th and 13th century. The basilica’s exterior is adorned with green and white marble in geometric patterns, somewhat akin to the facades of Santa Croce and Santa Maria Novella. A 12th-century mosaic decorates the facade above a central window.

Positioned with your back towards the church front, one can relish a stunning viewpoint of Florence, even higher than the captivating Piazzale Michelangelo. From this elevated vantage point, one can observe the Duomo and Palazzo Vecchio, up to the remaining parts of the medieval barriers that once encircled Florence.

Additional Information

This excursion is ideal for those who wish to actively explore the city of Florence. Beginning at the Ponte Vecchio and following the Arno, you’ll discover a hidden ancient staircase. This staircase leads up to Piazzale Michelangelo, a vantage point offering an unparalleled panorama of the Renaissance city. Piazzale Michelangelo was established in the 19th century as a homage to the exceptional creativity of renowned Florentine sculptor Michelangelo Buonarroti. Displayed centrally in the spacious square are 19th-century replicas of Buonarroti’s most significant sculptures, including his acclaimed masterpiece, the David. Our journey continues up another set of stairs to the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte, a gem of a Romanesque Basilica on a slope. The vista of Florence from the San Miniato hill is nothing short of breathtaking. Another notable site in San Miniato is the Cemetery of the Holy Doors, a grand burial ground that is the final resting place of several prominent Florentines, including Carlo Collodi, the author of the story of Pinocchio.
