Highlights
  • Galleria dell’Accademia - The Accademia Gallery in Florence, once an integral part of the fine arts academy, traces its origins back to 1784 when it was founded by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo. Initially showcasing gypsum models by Giambologna, it evolved into an impressive collection featuring both original and replicated artworks. The gallery’s richness was further enhanced by the inclusion of Gothic and Renaissance paintings sourced from abolished churches and convents.

In 1873, the gallery was selected as the new home for Michelangelo’s David, a decision prompted by safety concerns in Signoria Square. Over the years, additional masterpieces by Michelangelo, such as the Prisoners, St. Matthew, and Pieta, found a home within the Accademia, transforming it into an unofficial Michelangelo museum.

Immerse yourself in the stories behind each masterpiece with our expert English-speaking guide, unraveling the legacy of one of the world’s greatest artists.

Additional Information

Experience the artistic intensity at Florence’s Accademia Gallery, where every step immerses you in a vivid journey across the ages. The gallery traces its origins to 1784, when it was founded by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo as a part of a major arts academy. This gallery is more than a mere collection and serves as a tribute to the brilliance that has permeated throughout history.

Originally a sanctuary for Giambologna’s plaster casts, the gallery transformed into a stunning showcase of authentic and replicated artifacts, further adorned by Gothic and Renaissance artworks relocated from shuttered monasteries and cathedrals.

A significant milestone was reached in 1873 when, due to safety concerns at Signoria Square, the choice was made to shift Michelangelo’s famed statue, David. Since, the gallery has transcended from a museum to a de facto shrine for Michelangelo, boasting other masterpieces like the Prisoners, St. Matthew, and the Pietà.

A Visual Feast in Florence! - My recent experience on the Gallery Art Tour in Florence was nothing short of spectacular. Visiting the iconic art galleries of this mesmerizing city in the company of knowledgeable guides was a journey through time and artistic brilliance. The tour commenced in January, and despite the winter chill, the warmth of the art and the enthusiasm of our guide kept us engaged throughout. The Uffizi Gallery was a highlight, with its vast collection of Renaissance masterpieces. The guide's insights into the works of Michelangelo, Botticelli, and Leonardo da Vinci added a layer of understanding that transformed the visit into an educational and enriching experience.
