Into the Heart of the Sahara

The call of the desert is one that I have answered many times, but the allure of the Sahara is something else entirely. As a seasoned adventurer, the promise of a 2-day, 1-night journey through the heart of Morocco was irresistible. My companions and I, a group of thrill-seekers always on the lookout for the next adrenaline rush, set out from Fes with high expectations.

Our journey began with a drive through the picturesque city of Ifrane, often referred to as the “Switzerland of Morocco” due to its alpine-style architecture and lush surroundings. The air was crisp, and the scenery was a feast for the eyes. We made a brief stop to stretch our legs and capture the beauty of this unique city.

As we continued our journey, the landscape transformed dramatically. The lush greenery gave way to the rugged beauty of the Middle Atlas mountains. We paused to take in the breathtaking views and encountered the magot monkeys in the Cedre Gouraud Forest. These human-friendly creatures added a touch of whimsy to our adventure, and we couldn’t resist snapping a few photos.

The Magic of Merzouga

After a hearty lunch in Zaida, we pressed on towards the Merzouga Desert. The anticipation was palpable as we approached the golden dunes. Our guide, Said, was a master of the desert roads, and his playlist set the perfect mood for our journey. His expertise and friendly demeanor made us feel safe and well-cared for.

Arriving in Merzouga, we were greeted by the sight of endless sand dunes stretching as far as the eye could see. The camel ride at sunset was a surreal experience, the kind that makes you feel alive and connected to the world in a profound way. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the sky exploded in a riot of colors, and we paused to capture the moment.

Our camp for the night, Achabou Camp, was a haven of comfort amidst the vast desert. The tents were modern and clean, offering a cozy retreat after a day of adventure. Dinner was a delightful affair, accompanied by a drum show that had us dancing under the stars. The night sky was a canvas of twinkling stars, and we spent hours in quiet meditation, soaking in the serenity of the desert.

Sunrise and Beyond

The next morning, we awoke to the mesmerizing sight of the sunrise over the dunes. It was a moment of pure magic, one that will forever be etched in my memory. After a refreshing shower and a hearty breakfast, we set off on the next leg of our journey.

Our route took us through the charming Valley of the Roses, where we stopped to explore a rose water cooperative. The scent of roses filled the air, and we learned about the traditional methods of extracting rose water. It was a fascinating glimpse into the local culture and a reminder of the rich tapestry of experiences that Morocco has to offer.

As we made our way to Marrakech, we paused at Tizi n’Tichka, a mountain pass offering panoramic views from an altitude of 2260 meters. The view was nothing short of spectacular, a fitting end to an unforgettable adventure.

This journey through the Sahara was more than just a trip; it was an exploration of the soul. The landscapes, the people, and the experiences all came together to create a tapestry of memories that will last a lifetime.
