Highlights
  • Medina of Fez - Your experienced, knowledgeable, (English;french;spanich)-speaking guide from Fes Desert Trips will pick you up from your hotel or riad at 10 am to explore Fes Medina and its souks. You will get to see the world famous tanneries, the oldest university in the world and stunning coranic school, and get a tour of the city walls and the lovely gates that lead in and out of the medina and breathtaking panoramic view of the old city then visit the ceramic factory, the royal palace as well as the Mellah (Jewish quarter).

You will begin the visit with the guided walking tour of the medina itself, a UNESCO world heritage site, which is a labyrinth of 9,600 twisting, turning alleyways and the largest urbanized pedestrian area in the world. Here we will first visit Seffarine Square where you can see (and hear!) the metalworkers playing there trade in the traditional manner using copper, brass and pewter. On you go through the snaking passageways to visit the famous tanneries then the Al-Quarawiyyine University, the oldest university in the world and very important to Islam and gloriously decorated and recently restored to its ancient glory, and then the exotic aromatic spices and fresh, piled vegetables in the Attarine souk to the exquisitely decorated Attarine medersa and then you visit the Nejjarine square and its beautiful mozaic, blue and white public fountain and the Woodwork Museum and caravanserai.
Your journey will continue with a tour around the city ramparts of Fes with air-conditioned car, to see the ancient walls and numerous pretty Babs until you reach the South Tower, a French built fortress built on a hilltop overlooking the medina which provides stunning views of the old city and its surrounds then drive to ceramic factory, where you can see the potters at their trade and using the kilns to make their ceramic wares. Here you will also get a chance to see the traditional Fassi blue and white pottery at bargain prices as well as other designs in a myriad of colours. Then to the mighty Dar El Makhzen which is the Royal Palace of Fes with it’s seven huge bronze entrance doors. Then a short drive to the magnificent Bab Boujloud, the huge main gateway to the medina, patterned on one side in blue tiles, for Fes, and on the other in green, for Islam.

At the end of the day you will be dropped off at your overnight accommodation by your Fes Desert Trips guide.

Fés Medina Cultural Walking Tour - What an incredible experience! We did a guided cultural walking tour of the medina. Our guide Mohammed Yasin was absolutely amazing! Very knowledgeable. He answered all our questions, made sure that we saw everything of importance. The restaurants he recommended were top quality. We cannot thank him enough for going beyond the call of duty to make our stay in Fés an unforgettable experience. Shukran Yasin We will never forget you!

Wonderful Tour in Fez - Great tour overall! I loved getting to see the artisans in addition to all the main sites. Started at the gate and walked throughout the old medina stopping every now and again to look at shops and stands. Got the chance to visit a beautiful old madrassa and observe the lovely exteriors of several ornate mosques. The best part of the trip however was learning about the different artisans and observing them in their craft. The guide took me to various places including carpet makers, ceramic artisans, tanners, carpenters, wood painters, and stone engravers. My tour guide, Najib, was great and super knowledgeable. Overall, I had a great time!

An excellent day out...History, culture, food, songs and Najib's stories!! - I wouldnt attempt the medina without a guide first up. We had a brilliant time thanks to Sami, organising and driving, and to Najib, educating and entertaining us whilst walking us around the 'good medina'. A few experiences i'll never forget...learning about Berber cultute, tea on the rooftop, great food and seeing the 'old ways' still going strong....tanneries, bakers, wood workers, artists, potters. Expect to spend a little along the way, but at a very (too) fair price, its more than worth it, 100% recommemd.

The perfect way to see Fes! - Sami was very kind and accommodated our booking we placed in the morning of the same day. He drove us to a few locations for us to get out for a few minutes and take pictures, then he brought us to another tour guide who walked us through all the winding streets of the Medina expertly. We got to see all the things we were hoping to see, and got chances to buy goods from a few co-ops after getting explanations of their processes and work. The people at the co-ops gave some suggestions of what to buy but did not hassle us at all. Our guide asked if we wanted lunch, and took us to a restaurant and left us to eat and rest for an hour before seeing a few more sites and then bringing us back to Sami who dropped us back off. We would take the tour again! So much good information and a wonderful experience!

A fun and comprehensive tour - Our tour started in the high cliffs of the medina walls. With a panoramic view to the medina. Sami the driver and Najib the guide were the most fun and entertaining guides. Always smiling, giving options and suggestions for things to do. We are accompanied by Najib majority of the time. He is a great guide, super knowledgeable. Very good English and always willing to help, he speaks from the heart. The lunch was a bit more expensive than we would anticipate but the food was delicious and very large portions! So don’t worry, you will leave the restaurant very satisfied, if not rolling haha. I honestly recommend this tour if you would like to see the heart of the medina.

Ok - This tour was separated into two parts, driving and walking. We liked our driver Sammy who picked us up. He showed showed us a nice hill that we walked around on with a great view. That was nice. We drove by and did a quick stop at the blue gate, but I really wish we could have had more info on it. We were then taken to the ceramic co-op where we met “Chico” Mohamed. It started out good. He walked us through several good places though that we’re very interesting such as the community bakery and the weaving shop and tannery. He took us to all the shops that expect you to buy things in term for a demonstration. He did say that we’re not obligated to buy, but we did feel pressured. I guess there just no way around it. On the other hand, we did see some very interesting things because of the guide, so I don’t regret getting them. However, I’m not sure these two were “official” tour guides. The guides we were able to secure in Marrakech had official licenses and seemed much more professional. The walking guide “Chico” asked us if we liked the tour and when we said yes, he asked “would you like to give me something for it?” Which really put us off. We booked our tours in Marrakech with “Tours With Locals” and were able to read reviews for and select our guide, but they didn’t have Tours with Locals guides in Fes so that’s why we went with Viator. Also, I think the price here was a little high because our Riad showed us a paper that had official city regulated tour prices and they were way cheaper…like $40 per group for a tour. Overall it was ok. We wouldn’t use viator again, but it’s fine for what it was.
