Additional Information

Located on a volcanic plateau, towering above the sea, Herculaneum was one among the cities of Vesuvius submerged by its eruption in 79 AD. The eruption buried the city under debris as high as twenty-three meters. Today, the excavations allow visitors to see the city’s layout, the arrangement of houses, the impressive complex of baths, and the significant basilica. The remarkably preserved wooden elements, bronze artefacts and house facades provide a detailed insight into residential life, enabling a reconstruction of everyday life, lifestyle, and the diverse Vesuvian painting styles.

Overlooking the Bay of Naples to the north, Sorrento is spread out near the end of the hilly Sorrentine peninsula, just over the hills from the popular Amalfi Coast resorts. Mythically, this area is viewed as the land of the sirens, enchanting sea maidens whose songs tempted sailors to their demise.
