Shackleford Banks Wild Horse Tour - I take monthly Get Out of Dodge and Detox Days as a solo entrepreneur and my trip to Beaufort was my best one ever. I took the ferry to Shackleford Banks to go on the Wild Horse Tour and it did NOT disappoint! I packed a picnic lunch, took a beach chair, and stayed after the walking tour to enjoy the water, sand, and atmosphere. And, yes, there were two wild horses not too far away from where I was seated. Word to the wise: Be oh so serious about taking sunscreen, bug repellent, and something to wipe your booty with!! The island has NO BATHROOMS and they tell you to either "go" in the bushes, which are really just twig bushes decorated with shells or wade out into the water. They weren't kidding! Thankfully, I came prepared with wet wipes...lol. I came home with giant itchy bug bites...no...actually they were welts...on my left leg and both arms, so yes, douse yourself with bug repellent, although those hidden sand creatures might claw right through it and have a feast on your skin. Also, be prepared to walk a little distance! This is not a tour for the weak-legged or faint of heart. It's not strenuous but it IS a WALKING TOUR! The tour guide was FABULOUS!! He was super informative and made the tour extra special with his unique knowledge of the island and its history. We went shelling after the tour and he was most helpful in identifying the shells on the beach. Afterward, I sauntered through the quaint town of Beaufort, which is filled with specialty shops, food, and ice-cream. I highly recommend this trip, and all in all it was a magical day of delight!
