Journey to Oban via Loch Lomond, Kilmartin & the West Highlands

Balloch - Traveling westward, the journey continues to the town of Balloch, nestled at the southern end of Loch Lomond’s Bonnie Banks. Here, there is an opportunity to explore and enjoy an optional hour-long boat cruise on the loch. While taking in the stunning scenery from the boat, passengers can listen to expert commentary from Neil Oliver, a renowned Scottish historian and archaeologist.

Rest and be Thankful - The route proceeds north to the village of Arrochar, situated on the edge of Loch Long at the base of the Arrochar Alps. The journey continues over the steep pass of Rest and be Thankful, leading to a lunch stop in the village of Inveraray, the seat of the Clan Campbell and Dukes of Argyll. This town, bordered by the sea waters of Loch Fyne, is famous for its oysters and seafood.

Kilmartin Glen - Next, the tour heads to Kilmartin Glen, one of Europe’s richest Neolithic sites. The Glen is home to numerous ancient standing stones, rock carvings, and burial chambers. Visitors will have time to wander among some of the nearby standing stones and burial chambers.

Oban - Arrival in Oban is expected around 6:30 PM at the central drop-off point at 1 Station Rd, Oban, PA34 4NU. The evening is free to explore the city or join fellow travelers for a meal in a local restaurant or traditional pub.

Oban - From Oban, the ferry crosses to the magnificent Isle of Mull, where rugged landscapes and wild beauty await at every turn.

Tobermory - Visit the renowned colorful harbor town of Tobermory. There will be a couple of hours to enjoy lunch, explore local shops, partake in a whisky tasting, or simply absorb the vibrant atmosphere.

Glencoe, Glenfinnan, and Return to Edinburgh

Glencoe - Departing Oban, the journey continues along Loch Linnhe through the Great Glen to the first stop of the day in Glencoe. Often regarded as Scotland’s most impressive glen, the towering peaks of this majestic landscape witnessed the infamous Massacre of Glencoe in 1692. The driver guide will share the details of this event and its significance in Highland history, fueling the Jacobite Rebellions for years. There will be ample time for photographs in Glencoe before heading to the next remarkable location – Glenfinnan Monument and Viaduct.

Glenfinnan Viaduct - Glenfinnan offers something for everyone. Set on the edge of the fjord-like Loch Shiel, it is one of Scotland’s most picturesque spots. It is also where, on August 17, 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie raised the Royal Stuart Standard, initiating the last Jacobite Rebellion, which nearly changed history but ended in defeat at the Battle of Culloden seven months later. In recent times, the Glenfinnan Viaduct has gained fame among Harry Potter fans as the stunning railway bridge crossed by the Hogwarts Express. Climb the hill for the best views of the Monument to the 1745 Rebellion and the Viaduct.

Fort William - Lunch is in Fort William, the second-largest town in the Highlands (after Inverness), where the ruined fort was destroyed by Jacobite forces at the start of the 1745 Rebellion.

Pitlochry - Pitlochry is located in the heart of the breathtaking scenery of Highland Perthshire. The town lies below Beinn Bhracaigh (Ben Vrackie), the speckled mountain, and beside the River Tummel, amidst some of Scotland’s most magnificent scenery. With a backdrop of surrounding hills and beautiful woodlands, it is a wonderful area for walking.

Forth Bridge - As the journey re-enters Edinburgh from the north, travelers will be greeted with views of Scotland’s greatest engineering feat, the Forth Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 19th-century engineering marvel was once the world’s longest cantilever bridge. Today, it stands alongside the 20th-century Forth Road Bridge and the 21st-century Queensferry Crossing, which opened in 2017. These three spectacular bridges, from three different centuries, span the Firth of Forth, connecting the capital city and the Kingdom of Fife.

Edinburgh - The aim is to return to Edinburgh at approximately 6:30 PM.
