Embark on a thrilling journey led by a guide as you delve into the spooky mysteries of Greyfriars Kirkyard. Dominating the new part of the city, this 1560-built burial ground in the historic centre is teeming with eerie tales of specters. Situated in Edinburgh, Scotland, is the quaint and gothic Greyfriars Kirkyard, famed for being the world’s most haunted graveyard. Bizarre occurrences have been reported for ages, but after the unintentional reawakening of George MacKenzie’s malevolent spirit in 1999, the activity substantially escalated, resulting in an astonishing number of victims.
Greyfriars Cemetery, named after the Franciscan friary that once occupied the area, was converted into the city’s main burial site in 1561. After realizing it was unfeasible to continue burying individuals in the church due to space constraints and ‘malodors and discomforts of summer’, the city council decided to relocate the Edinburgh cemetery to the courtyard of the erstwhile Greyfriars Monastery.
