Sailing Through Paradise: A Day in the British Virgin Islands
When the opportunity arose to explore the iconic Baths and White Bay in the British Virgin Islands, I couldn’t resist. Join me as I recount a day filled with stunning landscapes, delicious food, and the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.
Setting Sail with the Stormy Pirates
The Caribbean sun was just beginning to rise as I boarded the ship with the Stormy Pirates, ready to embark on a journey that promised both adventure and relaxation. As a former professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours in the ocean, but there’s always something magical about setting sail to explore new waters. The crew was welcoming, and I was thrilled to learn that they had upgraded us to a larger ship to ensure a comfortable voyage amidst the sea swells. It was a thoughtful gesture that set the tone for the day.
As we cruised from St. Thomas to Virgin Gorda, the crew efficiently handled the British Customs process, allowing us to focus on the stunning views and the anticipation of our first stop. The Baths at Virgin Gorda are renowned for their unique geological formations, and I couldn’t wait to see them for myself. The journey was smooth, and the excitement among the passengers was palpable.
Exploring The Baths and Devil’s Bay
Upon arrival at Virgin Gorda, we disembarked and began our short hike to Devil’s Bay. The path was manageable for all ages and fitness levels, and the scenery was nothing short of breathtaking. Our guide, Kevin, led us through the boulders and caves with ease, sharing fascinating insights about the island’s history and geology. His enthusiasm was infectious, and his guidance made navigating the terrain a breeze.
The highlight of this stop was undoubtedly the exploration of the caves. Crouching through narrow passages and climbing short ladders added a sense of adventure to the experience. The natural beauty of the area was awe-inspiring, and I found myself snapping photos at every turn. A quick stop at Poor Man’s Bar for a refreshing drink was the perfect way to wrap up our time at The Baths before heading back to the boat.
Relaxing at White Bay
Our next destination was the world-famous White Bay on Jost Van Dyke. The journey there was filled with laughter and camaraderie as the crew served up pre-mixed rum punches and a selection of beverages. The atmosphere was relaxed and carefree, perfectly capturing the essence of island life.
White Bay was everything I had imagined and more. The pristine white sand and crystal-clear waters were inviting, and the beach bars lining the shore added a lively vibe. I couldn’t resist trying the blackened shrimp taco at the Soggy Dollar Bar, and it lived up to its reputation as one of the best tacos I’ve ever tasted. With a Painkiller in hand, I spent the afternoon soaking up the sun, enjoying the company of fellow travelers, and relishing the laid-back atmosphere.
As the day came to a close, we made a brief stop in St. John to clear US Customs before returning to St. Thomas. The entire experience was seamless, thanks to the attentive crew of the Stormy Pirates. This journey through the British Virgin Islands was a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, and I can’t recommend it enough to anyone looking to explore the beauty of the Caribbean.
