• Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center - The tour kicks off at the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center’s parking lot, situated at 600 Canal Park Drive, Duluth. To start the tour, leave the parking lot and make a right turn onto Canal Park Drive.

• Canal Park - According to local lore, in 1870, every man, woman, and child in Duluth grabbed a shovel and dug the canal here in just three days! In truth, a large steam dredger did most of the heavy lifting. Not quite as exciting, I know!

• Glensheen Mansion - Built in 1908 by mining tycoon Chester Congdon, it was later inherited by his daughter Elisabeth, who spent her later years there. That is, until June 27th, 1977, when she was tragically found murdered in her bedroom, suffocated with a satin pillow. Nearby, Elisabeth’s nurse was discovered bludgeoned to death with a candlestick.

• Duluth - As the tour moves towards the outskirts of Duluth, one might wonder about the origin of the city’s name. It traces back to French explorer Daniel Greysolon Dulhut, who established a camp in this area in 1679, proudly raising the French coat of arms.

• French River - This viewpoint also features a series of panels showcasing the history of commercial fishing on the lake. It’s a significant industry! The fish sanctuary across the street isn’t open to the public, but it actively catches rainbow trout, raises their young, and then releases them back into the lake. This annual cycle helps sustain our marine ecosystems.

• Buchanan Historical Marker - To view the marker, park in the turnout ahead. Otherwise, continue nutrients from the soil. Like the trees, wildflowers have complex root systems of their own. Their roots help stabilize the soil, and they use these nutrients for growth, returning them to the soil upon decomposition.

• Two Harbors - This was once the town’s notorious area where men could be “relieved of their pay.” At its peak in the late 1800s, there were 22 saloons within just a two-block radius! That’s certainly a lot of places for these men to revel and share wild stories.

• Silver Creek Cliff Tunnel - Fortunately, workers completed the 3-year project without any incidents. With the tunnel finished, drivers no longer had to take a lengthy detour on a narrow two-lane road that ran right along the cliff’s edge. It was a nerve-wracking drive, where one mistake could send a car plunging into the lake.

• S.S. William A. Irvin Ore Boat Museum - On a clear June morning in 1928, Captain Edward Smith was at the helm of the SS America, a passenger steamship with 47 people on board. The passengers included several affluent individuals heading to their summer homes on Isle Royale.

• Gooseberry Falls State Park - The name originates from the Ojibwe name for this location. They call it Shabonimikani-zibi, or River Place of the Gooseberries, and they hold a special connection to these small, tart berries.

• Iona’s Beach - As this part of the earth shifted, volcanic eruptions spewed lava onto the surface. The lava filled in cracks and crevices, then solidified into rocks known as igneous rocks. The stones found at Iona’s Beach are specific types called rhyolite and felsite.

• Split Rock Lighthouse - Just ahead is an ideal spot to capture a photo of the Split Rock Lighthouse. In fact, millions of people have taken a photo from this very location, making it one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world!
