Additional Information

Visitors to the capital are encouraged to take a walk through Beijing’s Hutongs. However, city dwellers are aware that these lanes are as numerous as ‘an ox’s hairs’ across the city. The optimal means of acquainting oneself with the most picturesque snaking alleys, which are locally viewed as home, is by phenomenally dining through them. This is particularly true at spontaneous breakfast spots that vanish post the morning rush. In this excursion, you’ll unite with your multilingual escort and small cohort at an accessible place, subsequently embarking to sample conventional dawn meals alongside the locals who are fond of them.

Awesome Experience and Incredible Food - We did the breakfast tour with Garth, and it was the perfect way to spend our first morning in Beijing. Not only did we get a crash course on what to order, how to order, and what to look for in shops for the rest of our trip, but Garth was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and a great host. His deep appreciation for Chinese cuisine and culture shone through as he shared stories and origins with us, which was a delightful experience! Every stop on the tour was well thought out, timed perfectly, and, most importantly, delicious! We had the best time and can't recommend it enough!

Great experience - given by a local guide - It was a great experience, you wil get to see places and shops that for foreigners would be impossible to find! Great local culture food covered by a great guide and some background story. It’s also a big + that the guide speaks great English and Chinese, definitely a good starter of your holiday.

BEST FOOD TOURS - I went to Beijing for work. i am a chef by profession and wanted to explore and know what is the food like in china. before going i booked breakfast tour and dinner tour with Untour beijing food tour. and it was the best decision to book with them. Mr. Garth Wilson was our tour guide and he was a blessing honestly. Such a great guy and was so kind. he told us stories, history and details of each dish we tried and of beijing and of hutong and of china. My God this guy was so good. as much as we loved food we loved him more for the way he was telling us stories and history and he knew the best places. things he made us taste when i tried them from somewhere else they were not as good as the places he selected for us. If you book your tour please ask for GARTH. I think people should make a note to meet GARTH when in beijing as he is equally good as the historical places you want to visit. im back and i actually miss the tours with him. throughout my stay he was helping with chinese translations and recommending best places to visit. he told me which is the best place to buy tea. he was so kind. by luck i booked dinner tour with him and i was super happy and excited. dinner tour was another best tour after he gave us breakfast tour. this guys knows the best places and we tasted the best food. please when in beijing you must to breakfast and dinner tours with GARTH. next time im in beijing im going to have these tours again with him. i would never have found such best places to eat if it was not with GARTH's tours. it was the best decision. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE. I WILL CHERISH THIS MY WHOLE LIFE.

Great introduction to Beijing local foods - We decided to book a “back alley breakfast tour” the first morning for Beijing trip to get our palette started in a "home" country (we're Chinese) that my kids have never experienced before, being American-born. We met Garth on a cool, brisk spring morning and was surprised that he was actually Australian. We found that he has been in Beijing for over 20 years, speaking fluent Mardarin and was such a local that he knew the shop owners as we jumped from place to place. He transitioned from English to Mandarin to suite both my mother-in-law and wife and me and the kids. Garth gave us a backstory to every food we tried, knowing when and how the food made its way into the Beijing palette, whether from Muslim influence from the deeper regions of China or from the Mongolian invasion. He even had knowledge about the way the food is named and it’s influence on other regions of China. This backstory to each food was truly the standout element of the tour, letting us appreciate the food with historical background. Garth was very careful to emphasize that this was a 10 course breakfast and advised us not to eat everything we were served or we won’t be able to try everything. This was such a hard thing to do as everything was so delicious! A couple of standout points: 1. He paced the bathroom breaks perfectly around the nicer restrooms available in the back alley tour. 2. He knew the background story to the back-alley themselves, how they evolved over time both from China’s growth to the government regulations that tried to rein in the street food culture. 3. He arranged it so we never had to wait at any of the stops. We were able to get our seats and food almost immediately when we arrived. We really think this food tour set the stage for the rest of our food experience in Beijing, giving us courage to try many new things for the rest of our days, both at high restaurants and at street corners. Best of all, Garth had suggestions for us after breakfast (to walk off all the food) that led us to explore some of the best local areas of Beijing besides the standard sites we had booked.

Book it! - Would highly recommend this tour - Garth is a great guide, you get to try a wide range of different foods and really explore the area but also I found it so helpful just to figure out how things ‘work’ in China - how to order and pay etc which sounds simple but can be quite overwhelming when you don’t know! I thought Garth was really kind and fun and I felt really taken care of, which as a solo female traveller mattered a lot. I’ve now booked another tour with the same country for Shanghai!

Great walking food tour in Beijing - Great way to see Beijing local suburbs and taste the local breakfast food. Garth our guide was great, nice to see a fellow Aussie in Beijing but speaking excellent mandarin. Garth took us to different food stores and explained what they are and the stories behind the food, like the origin of the dim sim which I didn’t know. We love the freshly made warm ‘donkey rolled in dust’ mochi, and the lively lady who made them. Garth also went out of his way to get us some boxes and tape as we needed to send some parcels home. An excellent tour and a great informative guide. A highly recommended tour.

Must do in Beijing - I really recommend this tour. Our guide Garth was very knowledgeable of Chinese food, culture, history. You can tell there is a lot of work and passion behind selecting every stop and dish during the tour. I wish I had unlimited storage as everything we tasted was incredible!

Fun Tasty Off the Beaten Path Breakfast Tour - I really enjoyed the Breakfast food tour and Garth was a wonderful tour guide! If you are interested in trying new dishes at off-the-beaten-path places you will love this tour. We tried 10+ different foods, both sweet and savory, and toured all over the Hutong. Garth took me to tons of places to try foods I never would have tried in my own. He shared interesting history about both Beijing and the food we ate and had tons of great information about the area. Really a can’t miss tour whether you’ve just come to Beijing or have been here before! And you definitely won’t leave hungry!

Outstanding culinary and cultural experience - Our guide - Garth - showed us places only a long-time resident like him could know: Small restaurants and snack shops serving the most delicious, typical and varied food (and plenty of it, too). Most of the dishes were prepared on order within minutes right in front of us. The pace of the tour was well-planned, no wait-time and no haste either. Stops were a well-balanced mix of street food and sit-down restaurants. In addition to enjoying a great culinary experience we gained insight into Chinese history, society, economy, culture; Garth has deep expertise on these matters and shared it in a considered, articulate manner. Fyi, we also booked the Old Hutong Dinner Tour one day later with Garth and posted a review on TripAdvisor, and two more tours in Shanghai with the same company Untour Foods.
