Near the Laja River lies Dolores, the birthplace of José Alfredo Jiménez. In this charming town, days are filled with snow stalls in the main garden and an array of majolica pottery at the artisan market. It is also the residence of the priest Miguel Hidalgo, a man of libertarian ideals who led a rebellion against New Spain at the dawn of the 19th century. The history crafted during that era is now commemorated in museums, buildings, and streets.

On September 16, 1810, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla stood against the misrule of New Spain. He voiced his defiance at the Parish of Our Lady of Sorrows, constructed between 1712 and 1778. The priest’s residence, known as the Casa de Tithe, is now the Casa de Hidalgo Museum, where his personal belongings are displayed.
