Devil’s Dyke National Trust - This 300-foot-deep valley was formed by massive water flow off the Downs during the last Ice Age, when significant snowmelt occurred and the frozen chalk prevented further absorption. Erosion was facilitated by the freeze-thaw cycle, and the valley was further deepened by the movement of saturated chalk. The V-shaped dry valley of Devil’s Dyke is a result of solifluction and river erosion. Over 14,000 years ago, the area experienced a very cold climate (though not glacial). Snowfields covered the South Downs, and permafrost conditions kept the chalk permanently frozen. In summer, melting snowfields saturated the topsoil, as water could not penetrate the frozen chalk beneath. Waterlogged material above the permafrost slid down the slope, removing material through friction and exposing deeper layers of frozen chalk.
Enjoy a refreshment at the Devils Dyke Pub.
