• Yungang Grottoes - Note: If selecting the high-speed train option from Beijing, the Beijing driver will collect you from your hotel and take you to the Beijing railway station for a 2-hour high-speed train journey to Datong (second class).

Upon arrival, a private guide in Datong will promptly meet you and commence your Datong tour.

At 8:30 am, meet your guide and driver, who will be holding a sign with your name, in the lobby of your Datong downtown hotel. The tour begins with a drive westward to the Yungang Grottoes. As one of the first key cultural relics under state protection and a UNESCO World Heritage site, Yungang Grottoes holds significant cultural and artistic value. It showcases traditional Chinese artistic styles while incorporating elements from ancient India, the western regions, and the Central Plain. Yungang Grottoes marks the beginning of the “sinicization” of Chinese grotto art, housing 45 grottoes and 51,000 stone statues.

• Hengshan Hanging Temple (Xuankong si) - After lunch (not included), you will be transported to the Hanging Temple. Nestled between the cliffs of Mt. Hengshan, it is the only temple in China that integrates Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. The entire monastery is constructed with a wooden framework. Although not very large, it amazes visitors with its architectural design that relies on a mortise joint and is embedded into the cliff without collapsing. With a history spanning over 1,500 years, many renowned literati and poets have expressed their admiration for it.

After visiting all sites, you will be returned to your Datong downtown hotel.

If opting for the bullet train back to Beijing, you will be escorted to the Datong train station for a high-speed train journey back to Beijing. Upon arrival, a local Beijing driver will pick you up and return you to your hotel in Beijing. (During peak season, to ensure you catch your high-speed train back to Beijing, the Hanging Temple will not be visited.)
