Well worth the trip - Beautiful house and grounds with fascinating history. Our tour guide, Dennis, was very entertaining. He has a rhythm in his speech, a way of elongating certain words for emphasis, which made the experience very enjoyable.

Would return again and again! - The entire plantation was beautiful and our tour guide was so informative. The history of the property is amazing and all the improvements from the newest owner is great to see. My teens enjoyed it and eating at the Dixie Cafe was a delicious.

Well worth the visit. - We had a great burger in the cafe then took the tour with Darren as our guide. He was excellent. Very interesting house with many unusual things to see. The gardens were also beautiful! The museum was really good too.

My Aussie loved this place - What a great estate. We loved the fact the owner loves dogs and my Aussie was allowed on the grounds and in the mansion (although she did stumble on stairs and needed to be carried). The house is beautiful and my wife enjoyed playing the 1901 piano (1 of 20 sent to the USA). I am so thankful that the owner shared all this with us. Darren was a great guide and really made the tour special. He really did justice to the Bette Davis story. If you don’t know what I mean by this you have to go. Thanks again!

I recommend you go! - This plantation tour was one of the better ones we’ve been on. it was very informative and interesting. The grounds are stunning with so much to look at. There are stairs though… some people had to turn down the opportunity to go to the second floor. I only mention this because I don’t remember being warned of there being stairs to climb but I may have overlooked it.

Could better - The grounds, gardens, furnishings and customs house were all interesting. Unfortunately, our guide, Layla, must have a learning disability as she spoke lightening fast so most people could not understand her. Even when asked to slow down, she talked 100miles/hour.

Largest slave holding plantation but no mention of slaves at all! Rewriting the history? - We visited the Houmas House with the entire extended family. The grounds and gardens are very nice (with many eccentric and some creepy pieces of art). We did a Houmas House tour, which was fine but completely dismissive of the entire slave history of this place. When the group asked questions about slavery the guide said that they are not allowed to talk about it. What?! I know the website does not mention anything about slavery (let’s conveniently ignore the subject matter and pretend this never happened; rich Barons and their posh possessions are much more fun) but not even to mention all those hundreds of people on whose sweat and blood this place flourished while these Barons lived in luxury, is very disrespectful in my view. So, after finishing the tour with much of it focused on who seems to be a self-centered owner and his dogs and nothing on the true and meaningful history of this place, I left with a “something is not right” feeling. PS saw the owner’s responses on this matter raised by other reviewers aka if you want to learn about slaves go visit other places. Indeed, why would I go to the largest slave holding plantation to learn about slaves…? You own and live on the land that is drenched in human suffering that lasted for decades so come to terms with it!

Don’t ask questions - The grounds , buildings, and restaurant was beautiful and great food. I was so excited to go as I traveled from the west coast. I was looking forward to the guided tour as I love American history. I was meet by the male guide who as soon as I started to ask a question about the Houmas house he very abruptly said “ If you ask me questions during the tour you are not going to get answers until the end if we have time. I have another tour at 6 pm”. His rude comments shut me down and I really didn’t hear anything he had to say. If I wouldn’t have paid in advance I would have left . So I continued with the tour. The fact that I was the only one on the tour made it even more intimidating. Not enjoyable
