Journey from Dar es Salaam to Selous Game Reserve
Selous Game Reserve - After breakfast, embark on a drive to Selous Game Reserve with a packed lunch for the journey, which takes approximately 6 to 7 hours. In the evening, enjoy a boat safari before heading to Selous Kituli Tented Camp for dinner and an overnight stay. Covering around 45,000 square kilometers, which is 4% of Tanzania’s land area, Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest protected areas globally. Its size surpasses that of Switzerland or Denmark, remaining largely untouched by human activity. Visitors can experience pristine wilderness far from typical tourist paths, with spectacular wildlife including some of the few remaining black rhinos and wild dogs.
Exploring Selous Game Reserve
Selous Game Reserve - Spend a full day in Selous enjoying a game drive with a picnic lunch. In the late afternoon, continue the safari, taking in the beautiful views around Lake Manze and observing groups of wildebeest, zebras, hippos, impalas, and birds before returning to the lodge.
From Selous to Mikumi
Mikumi National Park - After breakfast, depart from the northern circuit to the southern part of the reserve, enjoying a game drive en route to the exit. Continue the journey to Mikumi National Park via Morogoro town, which takes about 7-8 hours. Stop at a village for lunch before proceeding to the lodge.
Mikumi to Udzungwa
Mikumi National Park - In the morning, after breakfast, drive to Mikumi National Park with a picnic lunch. A key feature of Mikumi Park is the Mkata River floodplain, an area of lush vegetation that attracts abundant wildlife. Interestingly, gazelles are absent here, with impalas occupying their ecological niche. Mikumi and Selous Game Reserves share the same ecosystem, covering a large part of central and southern Tanzania, extending to within 150 km of the Mozambique border, where the Niassa Game Reserve was once part of it. Predators in Mikumi include lions, leopards (which are more elusive), black-backed jackals (sometimes seen in the evening), and the nocturnal African civet. Mikumi boasts a rich birdlife, with over 400 species recorded, many of which are Eurasian migrants present between October and April. In the late afternoon, return to the lodge.
Discovering Udzungwa
Udzungwa Mountains National Park - After breakfast, drive to Udzungwa National Park with a packed lunch. As one of East Africa’s great forests, this undisturbed habitat is perfect for hiking and climbing along trails through the rainforest and escarpments. The plateau offers a natural vantage point, with views of sugar plantations against a backdrop of grassland and mountain forest extending over 100 km. The highlight is the Sanje River, which transforms into a spectacular waterfall, plunging 170 meters through the forest into a misty valley below. Udzungwa can be visited year-round, but be prepared for rain at any time.
From Udzungwa to Ruaha
Ruaha National Park - After breakfast, drive to Ruaha National Park with a packed lunch, stopping by the Iringa local market. In the late afternoon, visit a traditional Maasai village before continuing to the park for dinner and an overnight stay. Ruaha is Tanzania’s largest national park, covering about 22,000 square kilometers. Wildlife is concentrated along the Great Ruaha River, the park’s lifeline.
Exploring Ruaha National Park
Ruaha National Park - Spend a full day in Ruaha National Park, home to hippos and crocodiles feeding on schools of fish. The terrain floods after rain, creating precious pools surrounded by gazelles risking their lives for a sip of water. This is a permanent hunting ground for lions, leopards, hunting dogs, hyenas, and jackals. Visitors may also spot both lesser and greater kudus, sable, and roan antelopes. Ruaha is the only protected area in the world where the flora and fauna of eastern and southern Africa overlap.
Return to Dar es Salaam
Dar es Salaam - After breakfast, enjoy a game drive en route to the airstrip for a flight back to Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar for an international flight.
