- Dakar - Begin at 8:00 AM with a guided city tour to introduce you to Dakar. You’ll explore some of the city’s vibrant markets, including Kermel fruit market, Sandaga, and Soumbedioune art craft and fishing market. Dakar boasts a mix of modern buildings and historic colonial houses. With an estimated population of around three million, Dakar is a lively city with bustling open-air markets, café terraces, and delicious cuisine. It’s a shopper’s haven, offering exquisite crafts in markets, on streets, and in stores throughout the city. Highlights of the tour include: The Presidential Palace, Independence Square Garden, Monument of African Renaissance, Old French Cathedral, Old Train Station, and the Institut Fondamental d’Afrique Noire Museum (IFAN). Founded in 1938 in Dakar, this cultural and scientific institute focuses on studying languages, restoring African history, and promoting local cultures of the peoples once ruled by French colonialism in Africa.
Around midday, transfer to Dakar dock and take a ferry to Goree Island, a place deeply rooted in the history of the slave trade. From the early sixteenth to the mid-nineteenth century, men, women, and children were gathered on this small island, locked in cells, and then shipped to the New World, West Indies, and South America. The island was controlled by the Portuguese, Dutch, French, and British, all of whom participated in the slave trade. Forts and cannons on the island testify to its violent past. Many buildings, once used as warehouses or slave houses, have been converted into museums. You’ll visit the most famous museum, “La Maison des Esclaves,” which once held up to two hundred captives. Here, you can see the slave cells and the apartment of the slave dealers upstairs. From the “Door of No Return,” countless Africans took their last look at their homeland before boarding slave ships. Another museum to visit is the Historical Museum. After this moving and informative tour, you’ll board the ferry at 4:00 PM to return to Dakar and be dropped off at your location.
End of the excursion.

Indeed, you’ll see ample sights, but without the insight of a proficient guide, the true essence of Dakar may elude you. Throughout this popular tour pairing, my aim isn’t to make you enamored with Dakar as I am, but to foster your comprehension of it, transforming your visit into an enduring memory. Nevertheless, a trip to Dakar is incomplete without experiencing Goree island. This was the last glimpse of Africa for countless slaves before they were forcibly sent across the sea, never to return. A tour of the Door-Of-No-Return in the Slave House will give you an inkling of the deep significance of Goree, making it the most frequented location in the nation. Nonetheless, visiting the island can trigger a profound change in your perspective.
