Recently, the factory has been transformed into exclusive apartments. The villa now houses a museum showcasing luxurious 19th-century interiors. - Piotrkowska Street - This vibrant five-kilometer promenade is Łódź’s main attraction, embodying the city’s future aspirations. Visitors are drawn to this street for good reason. Piotrkowska offers a wealth of alternative culture, excellent dining options, and numerous post-industrial sites to explore!
- OFF Piotrkowska - OFF Piotrkowska presents a unique and alternative experience. Situated just off ul. Piotrkowska, between numbers 138-140, the complex occupies the charming old cotton mill buildings of the former Ramisch factory. The Ramisch family, originally from Czechoslovakia, moved to Łódź in the 1830s and purchased the first plot of land for the factory in 1850, expanding as their empire grew. By 1909, the factory was thriving in the city’s heart. Production continued until 1990, after which the buildings and their rich history were largely forgotten, leaving the area in a state of disrepair.
- Pasaż Róży - Walking through the courtyard from Piotrkowska 3 (or from ul. Zachodnia 56) showcases how a simple idea can have a significant impact. Róża’s Passage (Pasaż Róży) brings light and intrigue to this courtyard, linking two main streets. It once housed a dark, rundown former hotel later converted into residential flats, now transformed with vibrant mosaics reflecting natural light through thousands of mirror shards. The effect is stunning, transforming the surrounding buildings. Created by Joanna Rajkowska (also known for the palm tree in Warsaw!), the passage is named after her daughter, Róża, who was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare eye cancer, at a young age. After chemotherapy, she regained her sight. Róża’s Passage underwent a similar transformation, as the author describes, “from not seeing to seeing.” If you’re at the start of Piotrkowska near Plac Wolności, this urban art courtyard is a must-see.
- Manufaktura - Manufaktura is the result of Poland’s largest renovation project since the reconstruction of Warsaw’s Old Town in the 1950s. The site’s history is one of fortunes gained and lost, war, nationalization, and destitution. What stands today was once a series of factories producing various textiles, built in the late 19th century. Designed by Hilary Majewski, a St. Petersburg University graduate, the mills were constructed in a red-brick industrial style with occasional Art Nouveau touches. They belonged to Izrael Poznański, a Jewish merchant who recognized the demand for high-quality textiles in the eastern markets of Russia, Japan, and China. As Łódź was the westernmost city in the Russian Empire, Poznański combined western textile expertise with access to eastern markets, creating a successful enterprise that brought prosperity to Łódź.
