Both ‘Rainbow Mountain’ and ‘Montaña de 7 colores Vinicunca’ are recognized names for this natural marvel. The original name is derived from the Quechua words ‘Wini rumi’ and ‘Kunka’, signifying ‘Black stone’ and ‘neck’, respectively. These words reference the abundance of black stones and the hill’s resemblance to a neck in the area.
Each distinct color band that makes up the Rainbow Mountain is created by different geological phenomena, as explained by the Office of Cultural Landscape and Muñoz’s study:
Pink is a mix of red clays, mudstones, and sands. White is made up of sandstones (quartz sand) and limestone. Purple or lavender bands are composed of marl (a clay and calcium carbonate mix) and silicates. Red strata are made up of argillites and clays. Green is due to iron-magnesium-rich clays and copper oxide. Finally, colors ranging from yellowish-brown, mustard to golden brown are a result of limonites and sulfide mineral-rich calcareous sandstones.
