Plan Ahead - This will be a very detailed review. Just a heads up. The trip was well worth it but it was a little more hectic than we'd like. Definitely recommend booking the tour more than 2 months in advance, if possible. Our other tour got cancelled so we booked this tour within a few weeks of our trip. We were contacted by Ivan via WhatsApp and met another contact, Caroline, in person at our hotel in Cusco where she gave us the train tickets to and from Aguas Calientes. Let's start with the Sacred Valley tour on day one. The tour itself was nice and the guide was knowledgeable. The tour started around 7am and ended around 3:30pm. After the tour, my wife and I hung out in Ollantaytambo waiting for our train to Agua Calientes that departed at 7:30pm. We had 4 hours to kills, which is a long time as there's not much else to do in Ollantaytambo. We got to Agua Calientes at around 10pm on day one. A lady met us and showed us the cultural center (where we'd go wait in line the next day for the pre-tickets for Machu Picchu) then took us to the hotel. I would not call it a hotel. When they say 'basic hotel', it means hostel. Granted it's not a shared space, it still has that hostel feel. Hot water didn't work. Ants crawling on the floor. Loud noise from the trains. Suffice to say, we booked a different hotel after the first night. We'd gladly pay extra for hot water, cleaner space, etc. Day 2 in Agua Calientes, we woke up at 4:30am and got in line for the Machu Picchu pre-tickets. The cultural center opened at 6am. There were roughly 250 people ahead of us already. The line moved fairly quick after the cultural center opened. They give you a number with your passport info on it and it had a time to return later that day to book the actual tickets. We returned at 4pm to purchase the tickets. It took about 45 minutes or so. We finally secured our Machu Picchu tickets for the next day. We booked Circuit 2B for 10am the following day, day 3. Honestly, Circuit 2A and Circuit 2B are the same tickets. We hung out in Aguas Calientes the rest of day 2. Day 3, we met up with our guide and some other people in the group and boarded the bus to Machu Picchu. It was about a 30 minute bus ride. It was pretty busy as May/June/July is there busy season. Machu Picchu itself is spectacular. We took the train back to Ollantaytambo on day 3. A driver was supposed to meet us up at the train station to take us back to our hotel in Cusco. He was no where to be found. We had to contact Ivan and Caroline. Finally got a hold of the driver and he took us back to Cusco. It was about a 1.5-2 hr. ride from Ollantaytambo to Cusco. We got back to our hotel around 10:30pm. Overall, it was a good tour. Some things could be improved. For example, the hotel is not actually a hotel but a hostel. Breakfast was offered at the hostel. Suffice to say, it was a sad breakfast. I barely touched it. 4 hr. wait for the train to Agua Calientes after the Sacred Valley tour is pretty long. Things of that nature.
