Highlights
  • La Leona Waterfall Adventure Hike - La Leona Waterfall is located in the small town of Curubandé, 20 minutes from Liberia in the province of Guanacaste. La Leona is a unique deep blue waterfall rooted between two canyons. It’s one of the few, if not the only, one in Costa Rica with this characteristic.

Its water comes from the “white river” or “Rio Blanco” that finds its source in the skirts of the Volcano Rincon de la Vieja. The color of the water is just amazing, between blue and turquoise, which is explained by the presence of sulfur. It’s definitely a must in this area!

Francisco's private tour is a must! Particularly if you are interested in the floral, fauna and history around the falls - A private tour is the only way we'd recommend going to La Leona Waterfall. And if your are interested in learning about the plants, animals and history of things you see along the way, FRANCISCO, is your guide! He is a local fellow having grown up in the nearby town. We saw monkeys, a HUGE hiding spider, bats, an owl, basilisks, a cinnamon tree, a tree trunk that smelled like coffee, citronella plants and more! He was watchful and thorough in instructing us on foot placement and hand placement. Navigating the river, paths, climbs and ropes was no problem with his guidance. He is obviously very proud of his home and likes to share the beauty of this amazing piece of Costa Rica. Highly recommend, Francisco and that you go in the early morning! It's so much more magical before the larger tours arrive. The company has newly built and very clean restrooms, open air showers and changing stalls. It's an absolute must to wear water shoes (they are available on site for purchase). Seriously, you won't be just fine without them! Take water, can't drink from the river due to natural minerals in it. They also have very reasonably priced bottles of water for purchase.

Great LeLeona Experience with Kids - My family (2 adults and 2 kids ages 5 and 8) did the private waterfall tour with Victor. He was very personable and professional. As a parent I was a little nervous taking my 5 yr old because she cannot swim well. We were provided with life jackets and wet bags. Overall the hike was not overly strenuous and Victor directed us where to step if rocks were slippery, etc. The point where you travel through cave is the deepest water and you had a guide rope to pull yourself along. It was beautiful. Recommend going earlier before the larger groups come in. They also picked us up at our hotel in Playa Hermosa and took us back. Andre was our driver and also was very accommodating, offering to stop a the way back to our hotel for lunch or wherever we wanted. Had a great experience overall!

Amazing guide and must do in Costa Rica - We booked a private tour and it was worth the extra money. Our guide Bernie was amazing, I recommend requesting him. He was so attentive, ensuring we didn’t slip in the rocks. His English is excellent. He knew a lot about the vegetation and the history of the country- thank you Bernie.
