Customized, private tour! - For my first visit to Roatan, I wanted to go to the sloth sanctuary and to snorkel from a boat at the West End, among the best sites to enjoy the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the world. The best option I found, with the best email communication, was with Dani, head of the Roatan Tour Guide Association. It was more pricey than other tours, but well worth it for my adult daughter and myself. After the convoluted exit from port, we immediately saw among the crowds our guide holding a sign distinguished by a red hibiscus. This was a welcoming start, especially compared to my tour in Cozumel! Young Andreas took good care of us the whole time. We walked a while next to heavy traffic to his car, then drove more than 30 minutes to Daniel Johnson's Monkey and Sloth Hangout (there are a handful of these places now). It was fun to hold a sloth briefly for pictures, then have monkeys and parrots (separately) pounce on your head to get pumpkin seeds. It's pretty crowded, but they did a good job of crowd management in small groups (we just beat a tour bus). Next was a long drive to the West End Village, just past Half Moon Bay. This laid-back village sports a few shops and restaurants with hardly any tourists! Instead of snorkeling from shore, I had chosen the three-stop boat snorkel for optimal time/viewing. Our small boat went out about a half hour to the first spot, which was pretty good although the waves were quite choppy and the water murky. The second spot, the Blue Channel, featured beautiful coral and a few schools of fish. The third, the Aquarium, had a nice variety of fish. Andreas led us around, pointed out highlights (he loved the little snails on the fans), took some pictures, and showed off his free diving. (In retrospect, my daughter, who had been here before, says driving all the way to the West End did not offer a superior experience compared to snorkeling closer to the sloth place.) The only disappointment was the quality of the gear Andreas offered. The first snorkel he gave my daughter crumbled in her mouth so she struggled the entire first snorkel. By comparison, his replacement snorkel was very high quality. The flippers also were mediocre. We suggested he upgrade. (RTGA recommends no flippers to avoid damaging the delicate coral. But Andreas was comfortable with us using them because of our capabilities and the rough waves.) Back on shore by 1:45, we enjoyed a nice lunch of coconut shrimp, local machuca coconut milk soup, which came with giant crab claw, and two delicious frothy colata drinks. Then we were back to port by 3, when Andreas collected the money owed. Though not the best snorkel conditions and no turtles, RTGA did an excellent job. Thank you.

Roatan monkey and sloths - We book this tour with Dani the manager and it couldn’t have gone smoother, always communicated with us and answered all our questions! We were the only people on the tour it was a personal experience, not like the ship tour companies where you go with 20-30 people! We had Andres as our guide and what a wonderful young man he is! Very informative about Roatan!! He also took us to the chocolate factory and no charge which was very nice!!! We would book with this company every time! Thank you Dani and Andres!!!

Monkeys and sloths... OH my! - Thank you Dani for setting up our tour to Mayan Jungle for our animal experience and to Andres for taking us there! We were able to hold, feed, and play with monkeys, hold a baby sloth named Trisha, and a beautiful parrot too. We learned so much from the guide about local wildlife and the ecosystem...thanks for helping us make awesome memories in Roatan!
