Electric Bike Rental with Aran Bike Hire - My friend and I rented electric bikes at Aran Bike Hire to ride around Inishmore on our own. I booked with another company at first, but cancelled that reservation because Aran Bike Hire was cheaper. (It was also closest to the ferry). We prepaid for the bikes, and had a quick lesson on safety and to learn how to operate the bikes, and were on our way within 20 minutes after we got off the ferry. There is a wait if you do not pre-book and pre-pay for the bikes. They also provide free helmets and bike locks. We had a rack on the back of the bike to hold our backpacks. We were given minimal information initially about safety features to ride the bikes, but when we asked another employee, he was extremely helpful. He thought we were joking when we tipped him upon our return. And, it would be nice if there were mirrors on the bikes. It's hard to keep track of your group. We saw most people riding regular bikes, and we were SO GLAD we had electric bikes - this is a hilly, hilly island. This is a beautiful, interesting island. Wish I spent the night on the island. Did not get to see all the sights, and bike rental lasts til 6 PM, so you have much more time to explore if you stay on the island.

Fun Exercise - We enjoyed the exercise but beware, there are hills!! That said, if you are in reasonably good shape, you can do the whole island if you don’t stop for long anywhere. We stopped at the Dun Aonghasa fort and spent an hour hiking up for spectacular views and as a result, had to take the shortest route back to the Ferry. That was truly a test; steep, breath-stealing hills and very rocky, unpaved hilly roads. Don’t take the expert hill in the center of the island is my advice. Very uncomfortable, bumpy ride! I wasn’t sure my tires would hold out. I’m 71 years old, and fit for my age, but I mention it so you can take that into account. Younger people might find it much easier than I did, but unless you’re used to mountain biking in rocky terrain, skip the hard road. The coastal roads have grand views compared to the inland expert road. Btw, there is no “tour”. There is no one to tell you about the things you’ll see on the island, nor are there signs except at the fort. If you want to learn about the island, take a horse cart tour. Or a bus tour. Or hire a guide. Good bikes with 21-speed gears. Road tires. This company has LOTS of bikes and all styles including e-bikes.
