Situated a mere 600 metres off the coast of the Aughrus peninsula, Omey Island is teeming with deep historical roots and tales from yesteryears. A local aficionado will accompany you to this island, only reachable during low tide, and present to you its remarkable history and narratives about the hallowed island of St Feichin. You’ll visit the remnants of Feichin’s Church, a medieval ecclesiastical structure erected on a Christian settlement from the 7th century. Encircling the church are vestiges of a partially submerged hamlet that met its doom in the Famine. Towards the west, St Feichin’s Holy Well can be located. Occupying a third of the inner part of the island is Fahy Lough. Presently, the island is mostly deserted, except for a few temporary inhabitants during the summer. At one point in the 19th century, it was home to over four hundred individuals who thrived on the abundant fishing in the nearby waters and bovine breeding on the fertile, lime-rich terrain. It now serves as the chief graveyard for this region, utilizing a historical monastic cemetery associated with Brendan the Navigator.
