Riding the River: A Surfer’s Journey Through Costa Rica’s Wild Heart

When the waves are calm, the rivers call. Join me as I trade my surfboard for a boat and explore the wild beauty of Costa Rica’s Tempisque River. From monkeys to crocodiles, and a taste of Tico heritage, this adventure was one for the books.

Setting Sail on the Tempisque

The sun was just beginning to rise over the lush Costa Rican landscape as my wife and I boarded the boat for our adventure down the Tempisque River. The air was thick with the promise of discovery, and the gentle lapping of the water against the hull set the perfect rhythm for our journey. As a professional surfer, I’m no stranger to the ocean’s embrace, but this river held a different kind of allure.

Our guide, Cristian, was a master of his craft. With eyes like a hawk, he pointed out the white-faced and howler monkeys swinging through the trees, their calls echoing through the dense foliage. Iguanas basked lazily on sun-drenched branches, while crocodiles lurked just beneath the water’s surface, their eyes barely breaking the calm. The variety of birds was astounding, each one more vibrant than the last, flitting about in search of their morning meal.

The boat tour was a symphony of nature, each creature playing its part in the grand performance. It was a reminder of the wild beauty that Costa Rica has to offer, a beauty that I often chase in the form of perfect waves but found here in the gentle flow of the river.

A Taste of Tico Heritage

After our river adventure, we made our way to Rancho Los Coyotes, a place steeped in Tico heritage and charm. The air was filled with the rich aroma of traditional Costa Rican cuisine, and my stomach rumbled in anticipation. As we sat down to our meal, I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to the land and its people.

The lunch was a feast for the senses. Each dish was a celebration of local flavors, from the savory gallo pinto to the sweet plantains. It was a meal that spoke of tradition and community, a perfect complement to the natural wonders we had just witnessed.

As we dined, Cristian shared stories of the area’s history and culture, painting a vivid picture of life in this vibrant country. His passion for his homeland was infectious, and I found myself eager to learn more, to dive deeper into the heart of Costa Rica.

The Journey Continues

With our bellies full and spirits high, we continued our exploration of Costa Rica, guided by Cristian’s expert hand. His knowledge and enthusiasm were unmatched, and he went above and beyond to ensure our experience was unforgettable.

From the breathtaking Llanos de Cortes Waterfalls to the enchanting wildlife of Bijagua de Upala, every moment was a new adventure. We swam beneath cascading waters, marveled at the slow grace of sloths, and even managed to snag some quality souvenirs to remember our journey by.

Cristian’s network of connections opened doors to even more experiences, like zip lining and horseback riding, making our trip truly one for the books. His dedication to his craft and his clients was evident in every detail, and I can’t recommend him and his team enough.

As we made our way back to the coast, the sun setting behind us, I couldn’t help but reflect on the day’s adventures. Costa Rica had once again captured my heart, not just with its waves but with its rivers, its people, and its wild, untamed beauty. Until next time, pura vida!
