Chasing Waterfalls: A Surfer’s Unexpected Adventure in Costa Rica
When our plans to visit Rio Celeste were thwarted, we embraced the unexpected and embarked on a thrilling adventure to La Leona waterfall. Join me as I recount a day filled with challenges, beauty, and unforgettable memories in the heart of Costa Rica.
A Change of Plans: Embracing the Unexpected
As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve learned that the best adventures often come from the unexpected. My wife and I had our hearts set on the Rio Celeste Waterfall Tour, a journey into the lush Costa Rican rainforest to witness the turquoise wonder of Rio Celeste. However, just days before our trip, we received news that access to Rio Celeste was shut down. Disappointment was quickly replaced with excitement as the tour company offered us an alternative: the La Leona waterfall.
The La Leona waterfall promised a challenging hike, and with my recent meniscus injury, I was a bit apprehensive. But the company went above and beyond, providing an extra guide to assist me. This gesture of kindness and professionalism set the tone for what would become one of the most memorable days of our trip.
The Thrill of La Leona
The hike to La Leona was no walk in the park. The rocky and uneven terrain demanded focus and determination. We climbed ladders, held onto ropes, and navigated through the dense forest. It was a physically demanding journey, but the guides were there every step of the way, ensuring our safety and success.
Our group, ranging in age from 17 to 55, embraced the challenge with enthusiasm. The camaraderie among us was palpable, and the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the waterfall was exhilarating. The sight of La Leona, cascading into a pristine pool, was worth every step. We swam, laughed, and soaked in the beauty of nature, feeling a deep connection to the land and each other.
Sloths, Lunch, and Lasting Memories
After our adventure at La Leona, we continued with the sloth portion of the tour. Visiting the Sloths Sanctuary was a delightful experience, as we observed these gentle creatures in their natural habitat. The guides shared fascinating insights about the sloths and other wildlife, enriching our understanding of the rainforest ecosystem.
Lunch at “El Sabor de Doña Carmen” was a culinary delight. The authentic Costa Rican flavors were a treat for the senses, and the butterfly sanctuary added a touch of magic to our meal. As we dined, we reflected on the day’s adventures, grateful for the unexpected turn of events that led us to La Leona.
The tour company’s communication and organization were impeccable, from the timely hotel pickup to the thoughtful accommodations for my injury. While the tipping etiquette was a bit unclear, the overall experience was nothing short of perfect. This day, filled with challenges, beauty, and joy, was a testament to the spirit of adventure that my wife and I cherish. It reminded us that sometimes, the best waves are the ones you didn’t plan to ride.
