Playa Ajuy - THE Walk to the caves!
The oldest rock formations in the Canary Islands
The Ajuy Caves, declared a Natural Monument, reveal the oldest rock formations in the Canary Islands, located in the town of Ajuy, north of Pájara.
This geological marvel allows visitors to see deposits formed on the ocean floor during the Cretaceous period, between 100 and 150 million years ago. It’s a mystery, as Fuerteventura’s formation dates back approximately 30 million years.
Accessing the caves is an extraordinary experience, as you walk along a fossilized sand dune, passing old lime kilns, unique for their stones being shipped directly into the sea.
In the Ajuy area, you’ll also find attractions like the Canarian palm grove of Madre del Agua, along the same ravine crossed by conquistadors 600 years ago.
- Mirador Guise y Ayose - Guise and Ayose Viewpoint
Named after the two ancient Kings of Fuerteventura who ruled the island’s kingdoms: Jandía and Maxorata. The viewpoint, featuring statues of the rulers, is located where the kingdoms once divided. Enjoy views of the Betancuria Valley, the volcanic northern half of Fuerteventura, and nearby villages.
The statues were designed by local architect Señor Miquel Cubas.
- Mirador de las Peñitas - Panoramic View: This viewpoint offers a breathtaking view. An underground river flows beneath the Las Peñitas ravine, emerging through human intervention to form a small lake surrounded by native plants. It’s a place where nature and human creativity blend beautifully.
- Ermita de la Peña Trail - The church is an 18th-century structure built by the island’s residents to honor their patron saint, the Virgin of Our Lady of the Rock.
A brief 5-minute stop can be arranged upon request.
- Mirador Sicasumbre - Heading south, we reach the Sicasumbre Viewpoint, situated about 300 meters above sea level. It’s one of the island’s best spots for stargazing.
The area’s beauty is complemented by the viewpoint’s facilities, offering information and signage for those wishing to capture the scenery with their cameras.
Our guide, Pepe, remarks: “It’s a panoramic and breathtaking viewpoint on clear, cloudy days.”
“We’ll stop there whenever the weather is favorable, without exception.”
- Tindaya - “La Casa Alta” (The High House) in Tindaya is closely linked to the witches of Tindaya.
La Casa Alta in Tindaya exemplifies the civil architecture of the 18th century, with walls that hold memories and legends.
Legend has it that Mount Tindaya has been a witches’ haven since ancient times, with the Majos performing rituals on its summit. There, magic intertwined with the divine, creating countless stories that echoed through the village. Good and evil, mystery and precision, the rain that brought life and death—always death—originated from the mountain.
From the mountain, witches descended, using the cover of night to discuss earthly matters, as they determined the village’s fate. According to legend, those wandering the village at sunrise sought refuge in the High House.
