• Maracanã - Following pick-ups, the tour begins with a visit to the Maracanã Stadium (exterior only), where there will be a brief stop for photos at the statue of Bellini, the renowned captain who led Brazil’s soccer team to victory in the 1958 World Cup.
• Sambódromo da Marquês de Sapucaí - After visiting Maracanã Stadium, the tour proceeds to the Sambadrome, where the magic of the annual carnival parade unfolds.
• Church of Our Lady of the Candelária - The Candelária Church is a significant historical Roman Catholic church located in Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. Constructed and adorned over a lengthy period from 1775 to the late 19th century, the church features a Baroque façade with neoclassical and Neo-Renaissance interior elements.
• São Bento Monastery - Next, the tour visits the São Bento Monastery, a site of monastic simplicity and one of Brazil’s most stunning architectural complexes. The exterior’s austere simplicity contrasts with the interior’s opulent gilded Baroque engravings featuring plant motifs. Visitors can admire the exuberant Rococo style on the high altar, the dome, and the Chapel of the Santíssimo Sacramento.
• The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Sebastian - Continuing through the city, the tour passes the Lapa Arches, Lavradio Street, and Avenida Chile, leading to the cone-shaped Metropolitan Cathedral, a major landmark and modern art masterpiece. Inspired by the Mayan pyramids of Mexico, the cathedral’s conical shape symbolizes closeness to God. Four stained glass windows extend from floor to ceiling, forming a cross at the top, and the acoustics are remarkable.
• Carioca Aqueduct - Situated in the city center, in the Lapa neighborhood, the Carioca Aqueduct is commonly known as Arcos da Lapa (Lapa Arches) by locals. Since the late 19th century, the aqueduct has served as a bridge for a popular tram connecting the city center with the Santa Teresa neighborhood uphill, known as the Santa Teresa streetcar.
• Escadaria Selarón - The tour then visits the Escadaria Selarón, or Selarón staircase, a vibrant tiled stairway created by self-taught Chilean artist Jorge Selarón. After traveling the world, Selarón settled in Rio in 1983, in a small house facing the neglected stairway linking Lapa and Santa Teresa. He covered all 215 steps with tiles collected from Rio’s urban areas or donated by visitors worldwide. Since 1990, Selarón has laid over 2,000 tiles, choosing green, yellow, and blue as the main colors, reflecting the Brazilian flag: unique pieces as a “tribute to the Brazilian people.” The staircase has appeared in numerous music videos, including “Beautiful” by Snoop Dogg and Pharrell Williams in 2002.
• Church of Our Lady of the Glory of the Outeiro - The Nossa Senhora da Glória do Outeiro church is a key monument of Brazil’s colonial religious heritage. Architecturally, the 18th-century building is a masterpiece, with the temple and nave still featuring the original Azulejo decorated tiles, which are small works of art. These ornamental pieces vividly depict Biblical scenes from the Book of Tobit and the Song of Songs.
• Botafogo Beach - Botafogo Beach is one of Rio de Janeiro’s most picturesque locations, situated within Guanabara Bay with Sugar Loaf Mountain as a backdrop. The beach is popular with locals for sports, sunbathing, and recreation, rather than swimming. Occasionally, music concerts are held here.
• Copacabana Beach - Known as one of the world’s most famous and beautiful beaches, Copacabana Beach offers a lively atmosphere with vibrant, fun-loving people. The tour begins at Copacabana Beach after pick-up.

Rio’s downtown is more than a busy work center for hundreds of thousands of Cariocas. It is a witness of more than 450 years of history. We can still find some of this history in the layout, buildings, places, and names in the city. We will discover this mix of the old and new city together. A good example of this history is the history of its cathedrals, several churches have served this role until the very modern cone-shaped Metropolitan Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro was build. Another example is the Benedictine monastery in Rio with its baroque church which baths in gold, the richness that was gathered on the backs of an army of thousands of slaves.
