With a history dating back nearly 2600 years, Constanta holds the title of being Romania’s oldest documented city. It’s not only the largest port on the Black Sea, but also ranks third throughout Europe. Furthermore, with a population of 400,000, it boasts the fourth largest city in Romania. Greek settlers originally founded Constanta, naming it Tomis in the 6th century BC, and utilized it as a Black Sea port for commerce with the interiors. Later, it was renamed in honor of Constantina, the niece of Constantine the Great (274-337). Moving forward, it remained a prosperous port city well into the 10th and 11th centuries, establishing trade relations with the Byzantine Empire and the city of Genoa.
