Among them is the Old Dutch Hospital, showcasing tropical colonial-era architecture. Constructed in the late 17th century by the Dutch, the building features boxy pillars, red clay roof tiles, and expansive central courtyards. Its design reflects the tropical needs and local building styles of Ceylon at the time, differing significantly from European structures of the same period. While the building may appear somewhat understated, its historical significance is palpable during a visit. -
Old Parliament Building - Old Parliament
This Neo-Baroque-style building was erected during the British colonial period to accommodate the Legislative Council of Ceylon, conceived by Sir Henry McCallum. It was part of a proposal by a committee to build a new structure for the Secretariat, Council Chamber, and Government offices on reclaimed land at the northern end of Galle Face, approved by the Government in 1920. Austin Woodeson, the chief architect of the Public Works Department of Ceylon, designed the building, initially estimating the cost at 400,000 rupees, which was later adjusted to 450,000 by the Public Works Advisory Board. The building was inaugurated on 29 January 1930 by Governor Sir Herbert Stanley. A year later, it was occupied by the State Council of Ceylon until 1947, when the House of Representatives was established with the advent of self-rule. -

The Sivasubramania Swami Kovil Hindu temple boasts a rich history spanning approximately 125 years and was constructed to honor Lord Muruga, also known as God Kataragama. It holds significant importance for both Hindu and Buddhist communities, who frequently visit the Kataragama shrine in the island’s south. The temple’s most striking feature is the raja gopuram tower, built in 1994 and adorned with vibrant statues of Hindu deities. It is flanked by two smaller towers and a clock house. The tower’s construction was celebrated with a Kumbabishekam, a traditional ceremony held after a temple’s renovation or reconstruction. -
