Highlights
  • Aviario Nacional de Colombia - This place is for bird lovers, birdwatchers and for those who just want to be amazed by nature. Let’s just start by saying that Colombia has the greatest avian biodiversity in the world because 20% of all bird species on earth can be found here, that is exactly 1,889 species besides the 197 species of migratory birds that are temporary residents. What we love about this place is that it doesn’t feel like a zoo. Many kinds of birds are actually free, and large-scale walk-in cages allow close contact with the birds. This makes the aviary unique.

On this tour, you will go to a very important and special place, The National Aviary of Colombia. This is a conservation organization that simulates 4 different ecosystems. Most importantly, they are highly interested in species preservation; therefore they promote knowledge about Colombian diversity, its sustainable use, and its responsible management through the use of animal welfare practices.

Additional Information

This excursion is crafted for those fascinated by birds, birdwatching enthusiasts, or simply for individuals who appreciate the marvels of nature. To kickstart, Colombia takes pride in having the world’s top-notch avian biodiversity. It’s home to 20% of the entire array of bird species on our planet or precisely 1,889 species. In addition to that, it hosts 197 species of migratory birds who consider this place as their temporary dwelling. Interestingly, this place doesn’t give off a typical zoo vibe. Such an unexpected delight! - This was an incredible tour! Vanessa and Roberto were our guides and they felt like family. They really made the trip magical. They took us to the aviary which is basically an entire zoo for birds as well as a nature park. It was way more than I expected. Vanessa knew so much about the birds there and was ready to answer any of our questions. She also knew some of the birds personally and they responded to her so well. We then decided to do a walking tour of getsamani. It’s such an awesome neighborhood. They explained so much of the history and the meanings behind the murals and street art. They were both so sweet and we loved every second of our tour!!!

Worth it with pickup and guide - We had a great experience from the hotel pickup to the return, with our guide being professional. The birds were also impressing with great like minded people

Visit to One of the Great Bird Sanctuaries in Colombia - We had a serious bird-watching guide, Luis, for this private tour. We weren't sure what to expect, but this really is a bird sanctuary covering many acres. It was founded by an individual who had dedicated his life to caring for injured birds and then releasing them. That developed over the years into this huge bird sanctuary. The bird life is jaw-dropping and Luis did a great job in helping understand a bit more about each species. As a bonus, the ride to the aviary is initially through the port and industrial areas of Cartagena. So, you see an interesting side of the city that most tourist miss.

Excellent Trip and Guide - This trip was amazing. Jaime was an amazing guide and our driver was excellent. The one hour trip outside of Cartagena was worth it. The pink flamingos and so many other birds were wonderful to see. It was not crowded. We went in the morning so the heat was not bad. Jaime gave us a bonus with some special balconies in the Old Town afterward. Wonderful in every way.

Nice driver. Worthless guide. Nice Aviary. Overpriced tour. - The Aviary is very nice. Many interesting species to see up close. And many birds are in the trees outside the cages for bona fide bird watching. However, the tour is far FAR overpriced. The driver made getting there, and back, easy. The guide was worse than useless. He incorrectly identified *every* bird for which he could not point to a sign. I knew we were effectively guideless when he claimed that both Great Egrets and White Ibises were "Herons". The path is easy to follow at the Aviary. Simply hire a car and driver and then self-guide your visit to the Aviary.

The Aviary was very interesting but our guide knew Nothing about birds! - The guide was ontime, gave a little history of the city as we drove to the Aviary and then didn't say much after that. He didn't know anything about the birds we saw. The Aviary was beautiful but the tour wasn't great.
