Colca trek in holes days with Waiky and guide williams - Superb landscape. Native guide of the canyon, very friendly and competent, who was able to give us a lot of information about the plants of the canyon and the life of the communities that live there. Great sporting challenge, demanding but accessible to those who come in good shape.

Senior in the canyon - Anthony was a terrific guide. I had chosen the 3 day 2 night trek because it fit into my plans, but it was, for a senior, the right choice. Even tho I am in good shape, the concept of running down into the canyon and running back up the next day does not give you the satisfaction of really experiencing the canyon which the longer trek allows you to do. Our small group really gelled and was from all over the world.

Unique and incredible experience - we were not warned of the difficulty of the first descent into the gorges, this is the only negative point. otherwise great guide, sumptuous landscapes and perfect stopover.

Great tour with an amazing guide - It was an amazing trip. We had beautiful views and saw many animals. Our guide Peter was very knowledgeable and encouraging. I was sick on the first day and my friend on the last. Peter was very helpful and considerate. He always made sure everyone was okay to continue and motivated us.

3 day trek into Colca Canyon - explained in more detail - Overall we enjoyed our hiking trip into the Colca Canyon and would definitely recommend the three day trek. I thought I’d write a more detailed review to explain a few things about how the trip operates though, because we had not read anything about this online before, and were quite surprised and a bit confused about how it was operating. Everything worked out fine, but it would’ve been useful to know exactly how it was going to work. So for those of you interested, here goes: We booked the tour through the office of Oasis Palmeras when we arrived in Arequipa. We decided on the three day tour as we had the time and it seemed like it would be a smaller group compared to the two day option (which it was) and allowed us to enjoy the afternoons of each day relaxing and exploring the canyon. We were told we would be picked up at around 3.00am on the first day to start the tour. Our impression (perhaps unwarranted) had been that it would be a tour group with one tour guide and the other guests for the entire journey, similar to all of our other tours in Peru, but that wasn’t really how it worked. We were picked up from our hostel on the first morning and taken to a bus with about 16 people on it. It wasn’t clear if everyone was doing the same tour or who our guide was and it wasn’t really explained to us what was happening other than that we were driving to a certain point, would have breakfast and then continue on to the condor lookout point. We did that, were permitted to stay half an hour at the lookout (which was fantastic, it was a cloudless day and there were about 12 condors soaring above and below the ridge, incredible to see) and then continued on, passing through the checkpoint to the canyon where you need to pay 70 soles per person (not included in the price of the tour), and on to the starting point of the hike. It was at this point that it was explained to us who was in our group and who our tour guide would be. There were seven of us, some who had arrived at the hiking start point on a different bus to us, and one guide. It turned out that on the bus we had arrived on, there were people who were self-hiking, others doing two days and some doing three days like us. It seems like the tour companies pool their groups together for at least the transport to and from the canyon, I’m unsure about the trek itself. My advice would be to simply look for the tour company with the best price, as the tours end up being virtually the same. The only variation would probably be the accomodation in the canyon, so maybe check that out. We began the hike down into the canyon, which took around three hours. It was a beautiful hike down, there is little shade though so prepare for sun! The shade and breeze around the river at the bottom was very welcome. It was good that we were all able to walk at our own pace and just wait at the bottom for others in the group. This was common throughout the three days hiking, that we were all able to go at our own pace and just had a designated meeting spot, which was great. The accomodation was nice, particularly the first accomodation, Colibri. The food there was fantastic, there are avocado trees growing all over the place so that was a very yummy highlight of most of the meals we were served! The second accomodation, Palmeras, was more basic, but comfortable enough. Most people did not have hot showers in their rooms but fortunately we did. The pool there was fantastic to relax in after hiking across the valley on the second day. That’s another reason I would recommend the three day hike - because at least in the season we visited (April), it tends to rain/thunderstorm in the afternoon, so arriving at this accomodation by 11.00am allowed us enough time to enjoy about three hours of sunshine before the clouds and rain arrived. The two-day hikers didn’t arrive until later in the afternoon, so it also means you get to enjoy the pool with fewer people around. Our guide, Juan, seemed to just really be there for logistics and to explain to us where to go and to liaise with the accomodation providers. He was a less involved tour guide than others we’ve had in Peru, but that might’ve just been our particular guide. He was friendly and helpful. Don’t be late though because he is very strict about operating on ‘Inca time’ and not ‘Peruvian time’!! :) After the hike up the canyon on the third day, we were told we would be joining a different group/tour guide to go back to Arequipa. It worked out fine, but again don’t expect that you go with a small bus/same people to and from Arequipa. The thermal baths on the last day were a great way to relax after the morning’s hike, and the buffet lunch was also good value. Both of these are not included in the price of the tour, so you must pay for them separately (15 soles and 40 soles respectively). Also note: it is (unsurprisingly) cheaper to book directly in person at the office in Arequipa than through Trip Advisor. We only booked two days before the tour started and had no issues. Other tips: - pack light, as you carry everything on your back; - bring snacks particularly for the morning of the last day, since you hike up before breakfast (start around 4.30am) and may have to wait for the last person in your group to arrive to the top which can be close to 8.00am.
