Fátima is acknowledged as Portugal’s spiritual heartland, attracting a multitude of visitors yearly. Being one of the world’s ancient universities, founded in 1291, the University of Coimbra-Alta and Sofia is positioned atop a hill, providing a panoramic view of the city. Over the course of more than seven centuries, the university has expanded, creating its unique urban setting within Coimbra’s old town.
The Biblioteca Joanina, the university’s library, is among the most frequented establishments within the university’s premises. Its construction commenced in 1717.
