Fátima is acknowledged as Portugal’s spiritual heartland, attracting a multitude of visitors yearly. It gained recognition being the site where the Virgin Mary made an apparition to three children on May 13th, 1917. Two of these children, Francisco and Jacinta, were beatified by John Paul II on May 13, 2002.

Fátima welcomes an impressive range of 4 to 6 million pilgrims throughout the year.

Being one of the world’s ancient universities, founded in 1291, the University of Coimbra-Alta and Sofia is positioned atop a hill, providing a panoramic view of the city. Over the course of more than seven centuries, the university has expanded, creating its unique urban setting within Coimbra’s old town.

The Biblioteca Joanina, the university’s library, is among the most frequented establishments within the university’s premises. Its construction commenced in 1717.

See a part of medieval history - We visited this historical site as part of a guided day tour. It is very impressive., especially the medieval library. The gift whole is vey nice and supports the students. I’d recommend including this as part of a larger day trip.
