Highlights
  • Grandola ed Uniti - We start our tour from the Renaissance hamlet of Cardano. Ride the narrow cobbled alleyways past the Bagatti Valsecchi villa that stills belongs to this noble Milanese family. The small agricultural villages we visit are composed of narrow paths with tight turns requiring agility and confidence on a geared bike.
  • Museo Etnografico E Naturalistico Val Sanagra - Ride a relatively steep downhill section into the Val Sanagra nature reserve to discover the valley stream that gave life to a number of mills and is home to gorgeous stone houses and ancient stone bridges.
  • Velzo - Ride uphill into the hamlet of Velzo, surrounded by grape vines and immersed in mountain scenery. Traverse the village following the original narrow alleyways including a few tight turns.
  • Piazza Maggiore - We enter Naggio, another typical mountain village with a beautifully preserved square, before preparing for a gorgeous, panoramic downhill ride (at times steep) to get our first glimpse of Lake Lugano.
  • Carlazzo - We ride the back roads to find hidden frescoes and continue on the original medieval road which includes downhill sections of easy gravel.
  • Lungolago Porlezza - Cycle through the historic centre of this lakeside town with it’s speciality food stores. Stop right on the beach and have a coffee or ice-cream in the area. The homeward journey passes the scenic nature reserve of Lake Piano. Follow the old railway line passing expansive green fields, stables and farmsteads until we reach Cardano where the tour ends. This stretch of cycle path is the only flat section of the tour.

Additional Information

This extraordinary journey offers everything: unseen hamlets, quaint beauty, breathtaking vistas of the lake, and a halt at Lake Lugano. We head towards the Val Sanagra nature reserve - located slightly north of Menaggio, it remains one of Lake Como’s finest hidden treasures. Navigate past fascinating stone homes and historic water mills. Ascend through the antiquated hamlets of Velzo and Naggio, enveloped by lush landscapes. Meander through untouched village squares free from the impacts of modernity and tourist influx. Relish a magnificent descent on an ancient medieval path. Panoramic views lead us to Lake Lugano’s coastline before we pedal towards Lake Piano via the old railway line — once a travel link between Lake Como and Lake Lugano, it now serves as a pleasant cycling route, marking our way back to Cardano, a Renaissance-era settlement. This excursion is a minor adventure comprising basic gravel roads, ascents, descents, and slender village paths - The ride necessitates good agility and self-assuredness in biking. An e-bike is a regular bike with gears and additional battery backup.

  • Minimum age 14, minimum height 150cm, maximum height 194cm (under 18yrs accompanied by an adult).
  • Suggested maximum age 60. Participants age 60+ need to be recent, confident riders on varied terrain.
  • Intermediate skills on a geared bicycle on mixed terrain are needed. Lake Como is mountainous - there are significant uphills and downhills; sections of easy gravel and narrow village paths requiring general athleticism, agility and confidence on a bicycle.
  • Suitable activewear is obligatory - No sandals or open shoes, no loose-fitting long skirts or trousers. Guests wearing flip flops will not be allowed to ride for safety reasons.

Highly recommend this tour! - This was one of the best tours we’ve been on in all of Europe. You get to see several idyllic towns and amazing lakes. It also feels great to get a little exercise while on vacation. But, it’s not strenuous at all. Our guide was considerate, educational and just plain amazing. Highly recommend this tour.

Honesty is the Best Policy - Our hosts were amazing. The bikes were top notch, route well planned & organized. Luigi, our guide was knowledgeable & on top of everything. The scenery we experienced was beautiful. I felt like bursting into song - “the hills are alive…” We were only 4. One of my group backed out because she didn’t feel her skill level was up to par. Courteous, considerate action. The two who were not in my group should have done the same. If you cannot ride a bike, don’t know how to change gears, or even how to do something as simple as mount/dismount your bike - stay home! This is a mountain biking tour. Key words “mountain” & “biking”. For everyone’s safety & just common courtesy, be honest with yourself. If you have a tinge of uncertainty, listen to it.
