According to ancient Maya beliefs, caverns were thought to be gateways to the underworld, where some Maya deities resided. Caves continue to be sacred sites for the Mayan people of Guatemala.

The name “Bombil” is believed to mean “Sacred Stone” in q’eqchí. The caves were regarded as a holy site where various rituals were conducted to request power, health, and bountiful harvests.

In this location, rock art and ceramic fragments were found among skulls. This was the first site in Guatemala where rock drawings were discovered, with the paintings dating back over 28 centuries!
