Zona Arqueologica de Coba - Its name is interpreted as “water with moss” or “moist water”, although some scholars argue that it signifies “murky water”, due to its closeness to several lakes that have a somewhat opaque appearance. Additional interpretations of the ancient Mayan language by different experts include “water of the chachalacas”; “Tuza’s tooth”, which is also derived from Mayan terminology or “copious water”.
Coba reached its zenith during the Classic era, achieving dominance over an extensive territory. From 200 to 800 A.D., Cobá emerged as one of the preeminent urban centers in the Mayan civilization, until its formidable adversary, Chichen Itza, expanded its influence.
