Salina Turda - Depart from Cluj at 8:30 am. Begin the day with an incredible underground journey into the depths of the ancient salt mine in Turda. Descend into the subterranean world, completely enveloped by salt. Stroll through a man-made gallery, explore three mining chambers, learn about mining techniques and local legends, and enjoy a boat or Ferris wheel ride.
Cetatea Alba Iulia - The next destination is Alba Iulia. Here, the Alba Carolina Vauban fortress will share fascinating tales about the ancient Romans, Hungarian kings, the union of Transylvania with Romania, and more. Enjoy lunch at a restaurant.
Castelul Corvinilor (Corvins’ Castle) - Later in the day, in Hunedoara, discover the Corvin Castle (also known as Hunyad Castle), which belonged to the Hunyad family, with King Mathia Hunyadi being one of its most renowned members. Here, you’ll hear numerous legends and stories about the royal family, its origins, medieval combat techniques, and more.
Sibiu - Arrive in Sibiu in the late afternoon, the best-preserved medieval fortified town in Transylvania, named European Capital of Culture in 2007. Enjoy free time for an evening stroll and dinner. Dine at a restaurant and stay overnight in a 3* hotel (if selected).
Sibiu - Bran - Brasov
Sibiu - Explore Sibiu, the best-preserved medieval fortress in Transylvania, the former capital of all Transylvanian Saxons, and the European Capital of Culture in 2007: the four fortifications of the medieval city, the Liar’s Bridge, The Small and the Big Squares.
Bran Castle (Dracula’s Castle) - Head to Brasov, skirting the Carpathian Mountains. Enjoy lunch at a restaurant en route. Arrive in Bran and visit the renowned ‘Dracula’s Castle’. Perched on a cliff during the Middle Ages and modernized in the early 20th century, Bran Castle is now one of Romania’s most visited sites. Discover its connection, if any, to the legendary Dracula.
Black Church (Biserica Neagra) - Travel towards Brasov, originally a Saxon town known as Kronstadt in German and briefly as Stalin during the communist era. Visit the Black Church, home to the largest collection of Ottoman carpets in Europe, and explore some medieval towers and bastions (if visiting on a Monday, the Black Church visit will be replaced with another).
Dine at a restaurant and stay overnight in a 3* hotel (if selected).
Brasov - Viscri - Sighisoara - Cluj
Viscri Fortified Church - After breakfast, depart for Viscri. This rural area reveals the best-preserved and restored traditional Saxon village in Transylvania, where the community remains vibrant, small rural businesses thrive, and HRH Prince Charles of Wales owns a traditional Saxon home. Visit the local blacksmith and the 13th-century fortified church (a UNESCO World Heritage site).
Centrul Istoric Sighisoara - Enjoy lunch at a restaurant en route. The final visit of the day is the Sighisoara medieval fortress, one of the few of its kind still inhabited in Europe. Surrounded by 9 of the original 14 defense towers, each belonging to a local guild, the fortress boasts beautiful medieval architecture and legends, including the one about Vlad the Impaler ‘Dracula’s’ birthplace.
Return to Cluj in the late afternoon. End of the tour.
