- Kapaleeshwarar Temple - Mylapore has long been recognized as the religious and cultural heart of the Tamil community. This village predates the city of Chennai. Historically, a magnificent shore temple dedicated to Shiva stood at this bustling ancient seaport until the Portuguese arrived in the mid-16th century. They demolished the temple, established a Portuguese settlement on the coast, and relocated Mylapore inland, where it remains today. The Shiva temple was reconstructed 300 years ago and is now known as the Kapaleeswara Temple. It exemplifies the pure Dravidian architectural style, featuring gopurams and mandapams, and serves as the central point around which Mylapore is developed.
During this tour, participants will visit the temple with an expert guide. The tour also includes a walk through the surrounding areas, showcasing Mylapore’s vibrant hustle and bustle. The jewelers, silk merchants, fruit and vegetable vendors, and flower sellers in the bazaars create a colorful setting around the temple. The walk leads through narrow lanes with traditional homes, silk shops, stores selling music and religious memorabilia, ‘kutcheri’ auditoriums, and more.
- Santhome Cathedral Basilica - San Thome Church, also known as St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica and International Shrine of Saint Thomas, is a Roman Catholic minor basilica located in Santhome, Chennai, India. At the conclusion of the tour, there is a stop at the popular Saravana Bhavan for snacks and coffee.
