Highlights

Romare Bearden, a globally recognized artist hailing from Charlotte, was a contemporary of Picasso and spent time in Paris. This park is a tribute to his legacy and mirrors themes from multiple of his artwork.
The Harvey Gantt Center, a masterful architectural piece, was conceived by the renowned architect Philip Freelon, known for designing the African American History Museum in Washington DC. This structure honors Harvey Gantt, a beloved local and architect from Charlotte. Stops will be made to facilitate exploration of the center and gift shop purchases.
Johnson C Smith University, a Presbyterian institution originally aimed at preparing black men for ministry roles, evolved into a coeducational institution for black individuals. It has become an integral part of the city’s future by collaborating with city leaders to provide a relevant education for the upcoming highly technical era. As one of the few urban universities in Charlotte, it boasts some of the city’s most historic buildings. The tour includes a visit to the campus and nearby areas.
Camp North End, once a Ford Motor plant producing Model A and Model T cars before the Great Depression, later served the US Army as a key supply hub for South East bases. Now, it flourishes as an entertainment district with a deliberate mix of black-owned businesses, including the James Beard-nominated restaurant Leah and Louise.
Three remarkable art venues are located in this zone. We will delve into the history of each site and also explore the VAPA, Visual and Performing Arts Center.
Julius Rosenwald, a philanthropist after the Civil War, co-owned Sears and Roebuck and established the Rosenwald Fund. Convinced of the interconnected challenges faced by blacks and Jews, Rosenwald dedicated himself to the education of African Americans post slavery. This tour includes visits to one of 2 school houses and concludes at Plaza Midwood.
