A Family Adventure in Charleston
When my family and I decided to explore Charleston, we knew we wanted to experience the city in a unique way. Having heard rave reviews about the Charleston Carriage Tour, we decided it was the perfect opportunity to immerse ourselves in the rich history and stunning architecture of this charming city. With three kids in tow, finding activities that are both educational and entertaining is always a priority, and this carriage tour promised to deliver just that.
Our adventure began at the Big Red Barn, a charming starting point that set the tone for the rest of the tour. As we settled into the cozy carriage, we were introduced to our guide, Tommy, and our gentle horse, Harmony. The kids were immediately fascinated by Harmony, and Tommy’s warm demeanor put us all at ease. The carriage was a bit snug with all of us, but the excitement of the journey ahead made it easy to overlook. Plus, the slightly overcast weather was perfect for having the top down, allowing us to fully take in the sights.
Discovering Charleston’s Hidden Gems
As we trotted through the historic streets, Tommy regaled us with captivating stories of Charleston’s past. From the colonial beginnings to the vibrant present, each tale was more intriguing than the last. Our kids, who are usually hard to impress, were completely absorbed, asking questions and pointing out landmarks they recognized from Tommy’s stories.
One of the highlights was passing by the Charleston City Market, a bustling hub of activity that offered a glimpse into the local culture. We also marveled at the grandeur of St. Philip’s Church, the oldest congregation in the U.S. south of Virginia. The U.S. Custom House, with its storied history, was another stop that left us in awe. Tommy’s knowledge and passion for Charleston’s history were evident, and it was clear that he enjoyed sharing it with us.
A Memorable Experience for All
The hour-long tour flew by, and before we knew it, we were back at the Big Red Barn. The kids were buzzing with excitement, eager to share everything they had learned with their friends. The complimentary water was a thoughtful touch, especially after an hour of exploring. We also appreciated the opportunity to have a group photo taken with our own camera, a lovely memento of our day.
What truly stood out to us was the humane treatment of the horses. As a family, we are always conscious of the ethical implications of our activities, and it was reassuring to see the care and respect given to Harmony and the other horses at Palmetto Carriage Works. This commitment to animal welfare made the experience even more enjoyable.
In the end, the Charleston Carriage Tour was a delightful way to explore the city, and we left with a deeper appreciation for Charleston’s history and culture. It’s an experience we would highly recommend to any family visiting the area, and one we look forward to repeating with future visitors.
