Additional Information

In the examination of the acknowledgments made toward the role and contributions of African Americans since America’s inception, it can be noted that there’s a suspension or denial in comparison to the systemic racism that thrives in this country, justified by tradition and cultural heritage. What stops America from adapting with the times?

Venture with us as we expose the lesser-known Charleston, and the conventional mindset behind slavery in this country - or more specifically, in the Low Country Charles Towne. Were our origins traced to GULLAH? Or were we rooted in AFRICAN ancestry? What was the gain in remaining subservient? How affluent were the emancipated individuals of color?

Unforgettable experience! - Frank, thank you for showing us Charleston in a way that recognized the contributions of black Americans. Your passion was evident, and the 2 hours flew by. We did a tour of another city a few days later and we saw things through a different lens. Sincere thanks for the unforgettable experience.

A highlight of our time in Charleston. - Many years ago, when Franklin went on a Charleston tour, the guide pointed to one of the antebellum homes and said "William Aiken built that building." Franklin said, "His money paid for that building. His slaves built it." From then on, he vowed his mission would be to tell the untold history of the city of Charleston and he does just that. His two hour, easy walking tour was engaging, moving, interactive and informative. He is enormously flexible and will take his group wherever their interest lies. Taking Franklin's tour opened my eyes, made me wonder more about all that isn't being told. He is a breath of fresh air, telling stories that need to be told. A highlight of our time in Charleston.

THIS is the Real Charleston! - My husband and I took this tour with Frankly Charleston Black History Tours after being in town for 3 days. During that time prior to the tour, neither of us could understand how this city worked and we felt like something wasn't quite right. Something was missing and we couldn't figure it out. On the 4th day we met Franklin and he showed us the REAL CHARLESTON! He pulled back the curtain on this neat and clean city that is pretty to look at but doesn't air out its' dirty laundry. Well, he aired it out alright and shone a bright light on all the stories and history that are uncomfortable but that need to be brought out and told. We didn't understand Charleston and it's sanitized representation until we took this tour and then we had our AHA moment. We got it, we saw this city finally! Our tour was comprised of 2 older white ladies, my white husband, and myself, a Latina of mixed origins (Indigenous, Black, European). Franklin gave the history unapologetically, judgement-free, and created a safe space for all of us to absorb the information at our pace. He noticed the interests we had and the questions we were asking and pivoted the tour to show us other things we would learn more from. Make this the FIRST thing you do here in Charleston, period! Don't wait like we did! Come with an open mind, leave understanding this city even more.

The tour with both the big picture and the behind the scenes important details. - Franklin's tour was solidly informative and eye-opening as to what we don't always recognize is right in front of us. On a previous trip to Charleston we had taken another walking tour that left us questioning the accuracy of some of what we were told. Frankly Charleston sets the record straight and vividly reveals the broader historical and cultural story of this complex city. We walked neighborhoods that aren't on other tours. We thought more deeply about how Charleston came to be. We heard the real stories behind the beautiful facades. Highly recommend it!

Unspoken history tour - Franklin gave an excellent overview to this part of history. We could have listened to his stories for much longer and will probably take another one of his tours next time we’re in Charleston. I would recommend this tour before taking one of the usual tours.

Better than all the other tours combined! - Franklin was very informative. His tour was the best one we took in Charleston. He is friendly and knowledgeable. You will learn more on this tour that is memorable than in all the others combined. He also makes suggestions about other places to see that tell the honest and complete story of Charleston, and he gives you a list of resources that are useful in the future. You will also likely meet some great people on the tour with you!
