Highlights
  • Chucktown Tours - We start out by the water, walk mostly in the shade - and take as many breaks as people may need. Please keep in mind. We’re not walking fast, and we take our time. However, Charleston isn’t known for its straight and level sidewalks – that’s why we don’t recommend wheelchairs and walkers on a tour like this. Strollers are fine. However, young children may need a little extra care on the narrow sidewalks.

It’s very hot and humid in in Charleston this time of year. In addition to comfortable walking shoes, and a great attitude - you may want to bring a bottled water.

Additional Information

I assure you that this tour will teach you more about history than any other tour in the city. I will introduce you to unknown facts and challenge what you believe to be true.

But… we begin by understanding what matters to you about history - your interests, and what you aim to learn. This helps me to tailor the conversation to your preferences.

I employ a narrative approach and frequently ask questions to stimulate conversation. My portrayal of Charleston’s history is humorous, captivating, and occasionally provocative.

We commence at Waterfront Park and forge south towards the renowned Charleston battery. Here, you’ll see some incredible sights and engage in riveting discussions about the rich history of the earliest fort of Charles Towne.

At the end of the tour, we will wind up close to our starting point, now enriched with the most priceless souvenir you can bring back from your journey – knowledge.

So, let’s go, folks, this tour is not going to reserve itself! :)

Location
Joe Riley Waterfront Park
Concord Street
We meet at the waterfront park, directly across the street from the Harborview Inn. There is a parking garage across from Fleet Landing restaurant one block up from our meeting place. Please wear/bring weather appropriate clothing, and arrive a few moments early, since we can not wait for you.

Our tour guide, Cooper,... - Our tour guide, Cooper, was absolutely fantastic!!!! He’s a retired history teacher who is a fountain of information about Charleston! Through his stories and knowledge we learned so much about Charlestons history. Our two and a half hour tour turned into an almost four hour tour. Cooper is very personable, with a great sense of humor!! You can tell he loves being a tour guide! He even gave us a card recommending places to eat of which we have tried two of them and were very happy! You haven’t had the Charleston tour until til you’ve taken the tour with Cooper!

Great tour of Charleston - It was a great tour, very informative and entertaining. Cooper, our guide, was knowledgeable, outgoing and funny. We learned several things about Charleston that our friends who live there didn't know. The tour goes by excellent views of the water and the old historical homes near the battery.

Highly Recommend - This tour and our guide Cooper was the highlight of our short stay in Charleston. Cooper enlightened us and entertained us with his quick wit. The walk was slow and he encouraged us to sit on a couple of stops. The 2.5 hours went by quickly. We highly recommend this tour.

Simply the best tour company in Chucktown - I've taken more than one Chucktown tour and every one impresses. Cooper has a great sense of humor and really knows his stuff. I mean REALLY knows his stuff. The guy can talk about cobblestones for a minute and it will be super interesting. I've fact checked him on some of the more esoteric points and he's always right. (His girlfriend must have that.) I learn something new with each tour and now I'm noticing that I know the southern end of Charleston so much better that it makes my other visits even more enjoyable.

Bravo! - It couldn’t have been better! Our guide, Cooper, made it enjoyable from start to finish. Not only did he provide fascinating details about history that you won’t learn anywhere else outside of a library, his sense of humor was second to none. A true southern gentlemen who also happens to be a teacher of history was the perfect combination to make this tour a wonderful experience.
