Highlights
  • The Powder Magazine - As one of few surviving structures from the colonial period, the Powder Magazine in Charleston, South Carolina has the benefit of time on its side. The structure was built in 1713 by British colonists to house guns and ammunition so that the fledgling colony could protect itself from the dangers around it. Its solid walls kept Charleston’s weapons safe for over one hundred years before being decommissioned.

It’s safe to say this building has seen a lot of action from, Indian wars and Spanish threats to French invasion and colonist insurrection. And, if you believe the local lore, it’s said that some of those who fought and died in these exchanges never left.

Deprived night of hauntings. - Lance was an excellent , knowledgeable, and complete guide.. Great for laughs and kept everyone on their toes. The whole tour group laughed and gained knowledge. The only thing is to make sure you read the disclaimers. It is for adults, it says in the disclaimer. So be ready to laugh and enjoy the evening of dark history. Also, go with the flow.

Highly recommended - This tour was great. The tour guide, Lance, was very knowledgeable and told the tales as historically correct as possible. He made all of the known facts interesting and entertaining without making up tales. He involved the tour group in the telling of the tales keeping everyone’s interest piqued and engaged. Having been on other ghost tours in Charleston and other cities I have to rate this one as a 5 star tour based on quality of information, entertainment and guide knowledge. I highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in learning about Charleston more lurid past.

Tour guide ruined the experience - If I could rate this a zero, I would. Our tour guide Laura was inappropriate, primarily catered to two wildly inappropriate grown men on our trip who were trying to play at being rowdy class clowns (who the guide also see/knew they were openly drinking and heard them make frequent sexual and homophobic jokes). My mother and I left early - and we honestly should've left after the first time she encouraged these two mens' sexual and homophobic statements (I would say jokes, but they were objectively not funny). We noticed many other women on the tour were uncomfortable.

Do NOT waste your money on this "Death and Depravity" tour - Do NOT waste your money as the experience is completely based on the quality of the guide you're assigned to and the tour did NOT stop at The Pink House or Chalmers Street as was advertised on the Ghost City Tours site. I had done quite a bit of research, as there are MANY ghost tours in Charleston, and thought if our group had 1 of the men (Lance, Aaron, Mike or Seth) we would have a great experience. I even called ahead of time to ask many questions for our group of 9. Read the March 2024 review by Marcy W - that was our exactly our experience! Laura made snarky comments to a male tour attendee (who eventually left the tour), repeated herself word-for-word because she lost her place in her memorized story, got defensive when we asked why we didn't hear ANY stories about Chalmers Street (the most haunted street in Charleston) or any depravity/brothels/piracy stories! Beyond disappointing!

You don't get what you pay for. - The guide was great, but leaving one star, since we didn't get the tour we paid for. We reserved a smaller group the ended where it started. We got the cheaper tour that had a larger group size and ended about a half mile from the start. If I paid for the cheaper tour that had the description we got, I would have given it 5 stars, but since we did get what we paid for, I'm giving it one star. Save your money and get the cheaper tour.
