Highlights
  • The Powder Magazine - As one of few surviving structures from the colonial period, the Powder Magazine in Charleston, South Carolina has the benefit of time on its side. The structure was built in 1713 by British colonists to house guns and ammunition so that the fledgling colony could protect itself from the dangers around it. Its solid walls kept Charleston’s weapons safe for over one hundred years before being decommissioned.

It’s safe to say this building has seen a lot of action from, Indian wars and Spanish threats to French invasion and colonist insurrection. And, if you believe the local lore, it’s said that some of those who fought and died in these exchanges never left.

Excellent Ghost Tour - Loved the Death and Depravity Ghost Tour! We did this on our first night of arriving in Charleston on April 2 and could not think of a better way to start our vacation. I wish I could remember our Tour Guide's name because he was awesome. (I am horrible with names). He was very informative and entertaining and we had such a great time. Highly suggest this tour if you are visiting the area.

Loved the history and Lance's humor - Thanks to Lance I had a great time listening to all of the history and I loved how funny he was. I would definitely do the tour again just to talk to him again!

OK, but others may be better. - There were some very interesting stories. The particular toiu guide we hd was a little too snarky for my taste, and I am snark friendly most of the time. Note, this tour does not go by the Unitarian graveyard.

Meh experience - I love a good crime show on TV so I thought this tour would be perfect for me. It is definitely not for anyone younger than 16 (per the tour company). While the description says that you start and end at the same point, we did not. We ended about 4 blocks away from where we started. While the female serial killer story was great, the rest of the tour was so so.

Down-starred due to Tour Guide - This was a disappointing tour, primarily because of our tour guide. I did not catch her name, but she was very proud of her New York, Irish American descendancy -- which her brassy accent and attitude also took away from a southern experience. She was crass, at one point telling someone else in the group that if he thought __something__ than he was a "moron," (and more awkward exchanges between the two), and when a member of my group had to step away for a moment, she threatened to embarrass her when she returned. There was not a lot of ghost story telling, just a lot of b*tch and sh*t being thrown around. She told us three times how this was her second job to make ends meet, and after taking several other tours and visits to museums, we discovered her "facts" were hyperbolic at best and downright wrong most times. I gave three stars because Charleston, by itself, shines bright. And I am sure the guide is working off a platform of information provided to her. But I also think it's on her to clean it up, learn how to tell ghost stories, and not always call a murdered woman a b*tch who pulls hair. She also ended the tour not at the beginning location, so we had to find our way back, I'm assuming because she didn't want to work one second longer than the allotted tour hour -- as she checked her watch often. In general, I felt she didn't want to be there. We did go to the Dungeon the next day and saw an unprovoked chain swinging... so there was that.

Just wasn't that interesting, would not recommend - Storytelling and content was sub par. We tried to enjoy the experience, but sadly neither of us felt it was worthwhile.
