The journey begins with a drive to the Omalos Plateau, situated at an altitude of 1,240 meters, which takes approximately an hour. From this point, the hike ascends to the Gigilos Peak at 2,080 meters and then returns. The drive initially traverses the Agyia Valley, continuing through the mountains, passing quaint villages, and culminating at the Omalos Plateau.
The hike commences on a steep path offering views of the Samaria Gorge, the peaks of the White Mountains, and the Omalos Plateau. In the initial section, hikers will encounter trees such as cypresses and prunus, which often have unusual shapes due to year-round weather conditions like snow and wind. The path then winds through towering rock formations known as the Towers of Gigilos and passes under an arch called Xepitira.
The landscape becomes increasingly rugged as the trail enters the alpine zone. About an hour into the hike, there is a spring with fresh water where hikers can refill their bottles. As the hike progresses, the path becomes steeper until reaching a shoulder named Linoseli at 1,700 meters altitude. From there, hikers can enjoy views of the Tripiti Gorge and the Libyan Sea. Continuing with a slight climb, the trail leads to the peak, offering a panoramic view. The return follows the same route.
