- Chateau de Chambord - This castle is one of the most recognizable châteaux globally due to its unique French Renaissance architecture, which combines traditional French medieval elements with classical Renaissance designs. Although never completed, it was constructed by Francis I, King of France.
Chambord is the largest château in the Loire Valley, originally built as a hunting lodge for Francis I, who had his royal residences at the Château de Blois and Amboise. The initial design of the Château de Chambord is credited to Italian architect Domenico da Cortona, with possible involvement or influence from Leonardo da Vinci.
- Chateau de Chenonceau - The Château de Chenonceau is a French castle that spans the river Cher, near the quaint village of Chenonceaux, Indre-et-Loire. It is among the most famous châteaux in the Loire Valley.
The Chenonceau estate is first documented in the 11th century. The current château was constructed between 1514 and 1522 on the site of an old mill and was later expanded to cross the river. The bridge over the river was built from 1556 to 1559, designed by French Renaissance architect Philibert de l’Orme, and the gallery on the bridge was constructed from 1570 to 1576, based on designs by Jean Bullant.
