City Tour and Monastery of Santa Catalina
Plaza de Armas - The tour includes a visit to the Plaza de Armas, renowned as one of the most beautiful squares in the country, next to the grand 17th-century Arequipa Cathedral, which has been fully restored after several earthquakes. Guests will explore the Cathedral and the Church of the Society of Jesus (1590), a prime example of local baroque architecture, featuring an outstanding collection of paintings and murals.
The Arequipa Cathedral is a masterpiece of Arequipa architecture, constructed in the 17th century using volcanic materials like sillar. It has been rebuilt multiple times due to earthquakes.
Santa Catalina Monastery - The tour also includes a visit to the remarkable Santa Catalina Monastery, a genuine medieval cloister established in September 1579, still active today. Spanning 20,000 square meters, this enigmatic convent was built with sillar, the primary material in local architecture.
Plaza de Yanahuara - The tour continues to the districts of Yanahuara and Carmen Alto, which offer viewpoints with panoramic views of the Arequipa countryside and the surrounding volcanoes: El Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu, providing a breathtaking sight. There will be opportunities for photography.
Arequipa / Colca Canyon
Vicuñas Pampa Cañahuas - The adventure begins in the morning in Arequipa, embarking on an exciting 160 km journey to Chivay. The route passes through the charming village of Yura, with streets and squares designated as historical monuments. The journey continues through Pampa de Arrieros and Pampa Cañahuas, home to the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve in the Colca Canyon, where majestic vicuñas roam freely. Guests can admire these beautiful creatures and the stunning landscape.
Mirador de los Andes - A brief stop in Patahuasi allows guests to enjoy a refreshing coca tea, a traditional Andean beverage that helps with altitude sickness. There is also an opportunity to observe beautiful birds, such as flamingos, during a short stop at the Tocra wetlands. The route continues past the crater of the Chucura volcano, stopping at a fantastic viewpoint of the volcanoes. The tour includes visits to charming villages and impressive views of the volcanoes from a viewpoint, with a cultural tour in the villages of the Colca Valley.
Chivay - Upon arrival in Chivay, guests have free time for lunch (optional). They will be transferred to their hotel for a short rest. Afterwards, the tour explores the town of Chivay and its market, offering an immersion into the Andean culture high in the Colca Canyon. The tour also includes a visit to the La Calera hot springs.
Colca Canyon / Arequipa
Mirador Cruz del Condor - An early start allows guests to enjoy a delicious breakfast before heading to the renowned Cruz del Condor viewpoint. Arriving in time to witness the magnificent depth of the Colca Canyon and, with luck, observe condors in the Colca Canyon. These impressive birds of prey are among the largest in the world, and watching them soar over the canyon and valley is a magical experience not to be missed.
Mirador Antahuilque - On the return to Chivay, the tour visits the traditional village of Pinchollo and the Antahuilque viewpoint, where guests can marvel at the ancient terraces built 1,500 years ago by the Collagua culture, which preceded the Incas.
Maca - The exploration continues with a visit to Maca, a charming Andean community affected by an earthquake in November 1991, and the village of Yanque, known for having the most beautiful church in the valley.
Chivay - The tour returns to Chivay for lunch (optional).
Arequipa - Finally, the tour returns to Arequipa, with guests transferred to their hotel, concluding an unforgettable experience in the Colca Valley.
Sillar Route
Canteras de Sillar Añashuayco - The tour heads to the Cerro Colorado district, reaching the Añashuayco Quarries at the foot of the Chachani Volcano, near the Chili River. This location offers a stunning natural and cultural landscape. Guests will walk through the area of the master cutters and appreciate handmade artworks such as facades and colonial carvings. The Pink Sillar, an area of the quarries reflecting an intense pink color in the sunlight due to the combination of sillar with sand and rocks, will be admired. The tour includes visits to artisan workshops to learn about sillar craftsmanship using ancestral tools, with an opportunity to purchase crafts (optional).
Quebrada de Culebrillas - Continuing the tour, guests will visit the Culebrillas Quarry and walk through this impressive natural ravine formed by water and wind erosion. The tour includes a walk through narrow walls to observe the Culebrillas petroglyphs with animal shapes such as birds, felines, and snakes about 30 meters high. These drawings belonged to the Wari culture, an Andean civilization that developed between the 7th and 13th centuries AD. Sillar has been used for constructions in Arequipa, declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO. At the end of the tour, guests return to the hotel. The rest of the day is free, with an overnight stay at the hotel.
Arequipa Countryside, Founder’s Mansion and Sabandía Mill
Paucarpata - The tour visits the Chilina Valley to admire the vibrant colors of the countryside from its great viewpoint. Guests will enjoy wonderful views of wide green fields and the Chili River. The tour includes a visit to Paucarpata, which has terraces and viewpoints with spectacular panoramic views of the Arequipa countryside, featuring landscapes of the imposing Misti volcano.
La Mansion del Fundador - The tour continues with a visit to the Founder’s Mansion, a traditional sillar mansion built in the 16th century by the founder of Arequipa, Garcí Manuel de Carbajal. Located 20 kilometers from the Plaza de Armas and near the Socabaya River, its colonial style and original decoration are preserved. The mansion was occupied by various notable figures such as doctors, bishops, generals, and priests. It features a small chapel, a beautiful main patio, and colorful gardens. During the tour, guests will see rooms adorned with paintings, ceramics, and furniture brought from Europe.
Molino de Sabandia - Just 9 kilometers from the city is the Sabandía Mill, an architectural gem dating back to 1621 made of sillar, and it still functions today! Surrounded by beautiful and spacious gardens, with local trees and plants like cacti and succulents.
Master stonemason Don Francisco Flores was responsible for building this fascinating place, and today it stands as one of Arequipa’s most important historical monuments.
At the end, the tour returns to the city center to drop guests off at their hotel. The afternoon is free for further enjoyment of this beautiful city. An overnight stay at the hotel is included.
